Onyx Path’s RPG of children of the gods, Scion, gets a rare update with a new Rock & Roll (and cryptid) themed expansion.

Rock Gods & Road Trips is a new expansion for Scion, the other, other game by Onyx Path Publishing. It’s not Exalted, it’s not the World of Darkness (which was technically only licensed by Onyx Path, but that’s a whole other labyrinthine can of worms we won’t get into).

It’s a game where you play as literal scions of the gods. You might be a child of Zeus or Susano-o, for instance. And depending on what you pick, you gain different powers. And grow in legend. Only now, Scion aims for you to be a literal rock god with the new book.

Scion: Rock Gods & Road Trips

It is rare enough to see anything for Scion. If it’s a system you love, you’re going to be all about this one. And weirdly enough, if you’ve never heard of Scion, this might be the best jumping-on point. Based on the description, Rock Gods & Road Trips is all about one-shots and episodic play, rather than creating a whole chronicle/saga that you play through in the hopes that your campaign doesn’t fizzle out.

Which is honestly something that the game needs. Every game needs a “hey, jump in and see” mode of play. And in this new expansion, we see what that might look like for Scion. Which, in this case, includes the new “Mythic Engine.”

As well as a new focus on episodic/serialized storytelling, you get modern mythologic elements too. You’ll find cryptids. Weird roadside attractions. Musical antagonists – everything you need for a battle of the bands. In fact, a big chunk of the book is dedicated to the rise of a band of rockstar scions.

“Rock Gods & Road Trips takes the legend-fueled, epic narrative of Scion and puts it on a tour bus on the path to fame and glory. In this book, celebrity and Legend merge in a thrilling combination of badass story beats, mythic concerts, and road-trip shenanigans.

Rock Gods & Road Trips expands the scope of Scion in a direction never explored before, using the episodic nature of serialized media to turn up the volume on places in the World where Scion fight for stardom, the meaning of their art, and the strength of their Legend against rival bands, disapproving divine parents, and Fate itself.”

It’s been a minute since I’ve played Scion. But this book has me excited to maybe jump back in. The one thing I’d point out is that this isn’t the final version, though. This is an “advance PDF.” Which seems like a fancy way of saying ‘playtest’ – though getting it now does mean you get to be one of the ones giving Onyx Path the feedback its looking to collect. Then you get the final PDF for free.

So if you’re looking for a final verion, maybe wait. But, if the idea of a sort of Brutal Legends meets American Gods meets Jem and the Holograms type of story sounds appealing to you (and why wouldn’t it) you might wanna check this out!

Josie and the Pussycats is also not a bad comparison – maybe even Limozeen in Space!
