Fabula Ultima, the award-winning TTJRPG, is back with a Kickstarter for new “celebration edition” hardbacks, with covers by Yoshitaka Amano.

Fabula Ultima: Celebration Edition has shot past $800,000 within the first 24 hours of a new Kickstarter campaign. If you’re unfamiliar, Fabula Ultima bills itself as a “TTJRPG” and, you know, it really nails the vibe. Crack open any of the core rulebooks and you’ll find both artwork and mechanics inspired by games like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger and if you’re really cool Suikoden and Breath of Fire. It won best game at the 2023 ENnies, and has by and large carved out a niche for itself.

And the new Celebration Edition Kickstarter is here to both celebrate and expand the award-winning game. It adds a new Bestiary, as well as a whole line of new hardback books, including a core rulebook with cover art designed by Yoshitaka Amano himself. Yeah, no wonder this Kickstarter is doing so well.

Fabula Ultima Celebration Edition Kickstarter: Shut Up and Take My Money Already

There are two big components to this Kickstarter. The first is the Celebration Edition of Fabula Ultima. It comprises brand-new hardback editions for the entire editorial line of FU. You can find everything from the Core Rulebook (with its new Kickstarter-exclusive variant cover) to the expansions like the Techno Fantasy Atlas or the Natural Fantasy Atlas. All redone in glorious hardback, with premium finishes and the like.

There is also the deluxe edition upgrade, which gets you each of the books with “beautiful geometric graphic covers” that have special UV insert bookmarks, premium cover materials, the whole nine yards. But if you’re looking for something new, you probably want to check out the new Bestiary, which gathers together more than 100 monsters to adapt and evolve, as well as new rules for making your own adversaries, NPC companions, and more. It’s the kind of book that FU has really needed.

But all that is burying the lede. Because let’s talk Yoshitaka Amano. You know his artwork if you’ve ever looked at a Final Fantasy game. Or read Deva Zan. Or Vampire Hunter D, or Sandman: Dream Hunters, or—well, the list goes on. Amano is a legendary artist, and he has designed a beautiful new piece of original artwork to celebrate Fabula Ultima:

[Yoshitaka Amano’s art] , which truly makes our hearts beat faster, will be used for a variant cover of the Core Rulebook, as well as for a huge special Collector’s Box, a nod to the special editions of the most beloved JRPGs. Both items are exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign, and will not be reprinted in the future.

What was that about the Collector’s Box? Well, on top of the variant cover, you get all the deluxe edition as well as an exclusive Game Master screen, and an item pack with accessories, and any physical stretch goals that get unlocked. Speaking of which, a ton of stretch goals have already been unlocked.

At press time, every single book has been upgraded. The new bestiary will have been expanded three times, weighing in at 364 pages (for now). The Deluxe edition upgrades have had added 3D effects, etc., but the real kicker is a gorgeous print of Yoshitaka Amano’s new illustration which is delivered in a “high-definition collectible fine print” which you can add on, get in the collector’s edition, or get a digital version of with any print.

The Fabula Ultima: Celebration Edition Kickstarter runs another 22 days. So don’t miss out on any of these incredible exclusives.

Nothing final about this fantasy rpg!
