If you want pulp horror at its pulpiest, the new Horrors of the Secret War has everything you need to amp up your games of Achtung! Cthulhu.

Modiphius’ Achtung! Cthulhu is predicated around two main premises: 1) it is both good and fun to kill nazi cultists, and 2) the horrors of war pale in comparison to the horrors of the Cthulhu mythos. Achtung! Cthulhu is best described as a Weird War 2 game—the invidious forces of the Axis truck with dangerous occult powers to unleash brand new hells upon the world, while the Allies and their secret divisions combat the horrors in the shadow, trying to keep reality together as best as they can.

It’s a classic formula that has been empowering movies and games since Indiana Jones and the original Wolfenstein. And in a new book, Horrors of the Secret War, Modiphius amps up the pulp and the horror. You’ll get a ton of new stuff, including new stats for Great Old Ones and their minions, rules for making your own cults and insidious organizations, and even World War 2 era mechs. Yeah, terrifying!

The best thing about this book, to me, is the rules for making your own cult. Taking the “Secret War” approach to its logical extreme, you can’t always be fighting the same guys. There are cults all over the place unleashing different projects that require you to stop them.

And the Invidious Cults and Infernal Sects chapter of this book is full of new occult organizations, pre-made cults, and rules for making your own cult from scratch. So you can break into their secret headquarters and start blasting nazi occultists and their horrors.

Speaking of horrors, you get plenty of those, too. Though they’re not all necessarily enemy terrors. In Creatures of Weird Science and Sinister Sorcery, you’ll learn about new enemies and new allies. Allies like Pork Chop, a pig man who the book itself describes as a nazi’s “wurst” nightmare.

Yeah it’s good times. That joke alone should clue you in as to the kind of time you’re in for with this game.

Achtung! Cthulhu already contains a huge variety of malign Mythos monstrosities, terrors, and abominations. But this new grimoire of terror expands on them even further. It also features a brand new section devoted to Invidious Cults and Infernal Sects, detailing the malevolent followers of the old ones.

Think of this as both an expanded manual of mythos monsters, and a GM toolkit. There are a few things for players, including rules for getting familiars like a pet monkey. But by and large, this is a book for GMs who want to make things even more over the top. Especially when you start busting out the power armor, like the Zaubererjager or the Nachtwolfe’s Juggernaut.

So if you’re looking to make your Achtung! Cthulhu sessions shine, be sure and check out Horrors of the Secret War, available now at the link below.

And of course, watch out for the undead!
