Spooky season is here and it’s time to lean into the horror-side of Marvel with these 5 characters we need for the tabletop.
Marvel Comics might not be best known for their horror-side but they have loads of characters and stories that cross-over. There’s already a few characters in Marvel: Crisis Protocol that represent that. Ghost Rider, Mephisto, all the Monsters Unleashed with Dracula, and even Man-Thing are prefect examples.
That said, there’s even more characters that I think fit that bill that aren’t in the game. So here’s a few that I’d really like to see make the jump to the tabletop.
Nightmare
I know I’ve mentioned Nightmare on more than one occasion but that’s because I think he’s underrated as a character. I really hope he makes an appearance in the MCU one day so folks can get a taste of what he’s bringing to the table. Nightmare is the ruler of a Dream Dimension and is one of the Fear Lords. That might sound like he’s too OP for the MCP, but if we can have Mephisto, then I think Nightmare could be added as well.
Hobgoblin
I know that folks might not think of Hobgoblin as a super scary character from Marvel. That’s because they don’t associate him with the supernatural elements of Marvel. Rather, they see him as a knock-off Green Goblin and foe of Spider-Man. While that’s not entirely wrong, there’s more to his character than that. At one point, a version of the Hobgoblin was trained by Baron Mordo to wield magic — specifically chaos magic. He was able to do potent spell-slinging with those powers.
I’d like to see a Hobgoblin version added to MCP because I think he’s different enough from Green Goblin to make it worth doing. Again, depending on the version of Hobgoblin you’re using, he could have some really dangerous (and scary) powers.
Daimon Hellstrom
Also known as the Son of Satan, I don’t think this character needs any explanation as to why he’s scary. That said, he’s certainly landing on the supernatural side of the horror house. He’s got dark magic powers as well as fire projection powers. Which makes sense all things considered. The thing is that Hellstrom isn’t entire evil — he’s fought on the side of good before. He’s a complex character that could be fun to play around with and I think he’d be a cool addition to Marvel: Crisis Protocol.
The Brood
I don’t really know how this one would be introduced for MCP. Maybe you’d a Brood Queen with Brood as grunts. I’m not sure — but that’s just a technical part of them. Personally, I think they are frightening thanks to the body horror they represent. From their wiki page:
“The Brood reproduce asexually and have no clear gender. They reproduce by forcibly implanting their eggs into other sentient organism. Each host can only support one egg. Upon hatching, the host dies as the Brood egg releases mutagenic enzymes into the bloodstream. At the same time, the Broodling mentally attacks and assimilates its host.”
I think we all know what that sounds like. So yeah, the Brood are freaking terrifying for a number of factors. They might be a bit too spooky in that regard.
Skrulls/Super-Skrull
Skrulls have attempted to invade Earth in Marvel Comics a few times. And I’m not actually spooked out by their looks but rather the idea of them. Think about it: they are alien shapeshifters that are so accurate they can fool the heroes in Marvel. They are so good, that their sleeper agents might not even know they aren’t who they think they are until they are activated!
So the scary part of their powers is the fact that they replace people. It’s like Invasion of the Body Snatchers…but worse. I don’t if that resonates with me because I watched Body Snatchers too young or what. But that concept has always felt unsettling to me so I’m adding them to my list!
