One of the best parts about the Horus Heresy range is that you can basically kit bash everything. Their Compatibility Matrix shows it!

Before we get too deep into this one I do want to mention that you can technically kit bash anything. Given enough glue, plasticard, greenstuff, and time, you could really combine any kit with any other kit. Your results could vary wildly based on your skills and practice however. That said, the Horus Heresy range is perfect for folks who might want to kit bash and still get remarkably uniform results.

“One of the best things about Warhammer: The Horus Heresy’s ever expanding range of plastic kits is how cross-compatible they are, with all sorts of upgrade sets letting you convert and modify to your heart’s content. Each kit is designed to fit onto all of the available armour marks (aside from Mk IV) right out of the box, so you don’t even need to do any tweaking of arms or bending of joints to make it happen.”

Kit Bash Horus Heresy Compatibility

As you can see from the chart just about all the weapons are designed to work with the different marks of Power Armor you’ll find in the Horus Heresy range. This was a design decision that was made early on that (I think) has really paid off. And honestly, it makes sense, too. The Legions all use the same weapons and armor so why wouldn’t they be compatible?

Obviously, there’s some kits where the kit bashing has limits. For example, the Assault Squads not combining with the various support weapons makes sense. Why would GW ever give heavy weapons to jump pack style troops, right?!

Oh yeah…Good thing we’re only talking about the Horus Heresy then, right?! Anyhow, the point is that you could buy just about any of the Horus Heresy Legiones Astartes Kits and the parts will fit been other HH Legiones Astartes kits. This means customizing your squads is really painless and you’ll get nice results.

Is This Really Kit Bashing?

“But that’s not actually kit bashing! You’re just using the bits from one kit and combining them with compatible other kits!” I mean …yeah. That is exactly what we’re talking about here. Just because it’s easy and designed to work that way doesn’t make it lesser. You’re still combining bits from different kits. Frankly, I kind of want MORE of this across the other GW Ranges and not less.

In fact another great example is what you can do with the Necromunda Terrain sets and some of the other GW terrain kits. Shoot, even the Adeptus Titanicus/Legions Imperialis Titans are designed to work with magnets, too. Again, I think we need more of that compatibility as opposed to less. You don’t need to use a hobby knife, green stuff, and plasticard to make these kit bashes fit for the Horus Heresy. And I think that’s great!

If anything, I hope that the ease of kit bashing these HH kits encourages folks to try for more complex kit bashing in the future. Maybe it might just inspire folks to get into messing around with plasticard and greenstuff for truly custom kit bashes. That’s one part of the hobby where your personal creativity can really shine. So go have some fun with kit bashing regardless of how easy/difficult it is to make those bits fit.

Kit bashing doesn’t have to be complex to be fun.
