Gunstar One, through a series of unlikely events, became The Last Starfighter to stand against the forces of Xur and the Kodan Armada.

The Last Starfighter is something of a dream come true—being so good at video games that you get recruited by aliens to save the galaxy. It sounds like fanfiction, or Ready Player One, and yet that very thing happened to a high school senior known as Alex Rogan. Not only was he chosen, as was mentioned, to save the galaxy, he was also replaced with a surrogate android so that he could also live his real life while doing Starfighter stuff.

So not only a galactic hero, but ALSO having a robot duplicate to just get more time done to have more things? In this economy? Certainly not. But that’s fine, because Alex Rogan was a senior in high school in 1984. And the economy was a little more robust then. Unless you happened to be swept up in the war between the Star League and the Kodan Empire. And that’s where the Gunstar One, the titular Last Starfighter comes into play, single-handedly saving the Solar System…and beyond.

The Gunstar One: Design and Capabilities

Gunstar One was one of many Gunstars. These craft served as the primary space superiority fighters deployed by the Star League in its war with the Kodan Empire. These were no short range snubfighters. Rather, a single Gunstar was capable of both short and long-range space flight, thanks to its powerful Rylan-designed engines. The people of Rylos built a multipurpose craft, and armed them thusly.

For weaponry, a Gunstar was loaded. Primary weapons included lasers, photon bolts, and particle beams. Meaning it could take on other fighters and even capital craft in extreme circumstances. Especially when aided by the onboard scanner and targeting computer.

Of course no workup of the Gunstar One would be complete without talking about the Death Blossom. This experimental weapon system was designed for only the most dire circumstances. There were those who thought the Death Blossom could overload the ship’s systems, culminating in fiery self-destruction.

But if it worked? Devastating. The ship would drain the reactor completely, unloading a rapid volley of all its weapons as the ship careened into a seemingly uncontrolled spin moving in all directions, beyblades style.

“What Do We Do Now? We Die.” The Gunstar One vs. the Kodan Armada

Gunstar One took its name after the Kodan Empire launched a sneak attack on the Star League’s Starfighter base, aided by military intelligence from the Rylan traitor, Xur. Using a bombardment from a meteor gun, the Kodan attack destroyed all the Gunstar craft. Save one.

Piloted by Alex Rogan and Navigator First Class, Grig, the Gunstar One was the only ship remaining in the Star League’s arsenal. With a teenaged pilot and an expert navigator at its helm, the Gunstar seemed destined to go out in a blaze of glory. Except for the secret weapon.

Using the same sort of maneuver developed playing the game, Rogan and Grig managed to hide inside an asteroid ship and attack the central communications hub of the Kodan Command Ship. In the ensuing confusion, the entire Kodan Armada was in range of the Gunstar One’s Death Blossom. And despite the risks, the Last Starfighter engaged the destructive system—and survived. The fleet broken, the Star League would forever sing the praises of the Gunstar One, the last of one era of Starfighters.

Talk about a high score!
