Jervis Johnson, Mark Latham, and Gav Thorpe have reunited to unleash a new Godzilla RPG, fittingly titled Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game.

Longtime readers of BoLS will be familiar with the names Jervis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe. Their contributions to Warhammer over the years are numerous and hard to overstate. But now, after having gone their various separate ways, the trio are reunited thanks to IDW Games. Together, they’ll be developing a new Godzilla RPG, imaginatively named Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game. Here’s what we know so far.

Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game – Coming Soon To A Kickstarter Near You

It honestly seems surprising that we haven’t had a Godzilla game by this point, especially back when the Godzilla vs. Kong movies were at their most fevered. Dan-Stevens-fueled descent into both the Earth and our hearts. But here we are. This first tabletop RPG for the Godzilla franchise will take place in the “Kai-Sei Era” which is the collective name for the shared universe/continuity under the IDW umbrella.

This mostly focuses on the IDW comic books’ take on Godzilla. In the briefest of nutshells, this is an apocalyptic world that has been ravaged by kaiju attacks, and different groups around the world have to deal with the fallout. In this case, G-Force is one of the main focuses, and players will join up with them. There’s also a new kind of energy source. “Kai Sei” which unlocks advanced technology and probably has some kind of interaction with whatever the Godzilla equivalent of Newtypes are. But that’s neither here nor there.

The important thing to know about the RPG is that you’re trying to stop the kaiju attacks around the world. And interestingly enough, the game will be completely diceless:

“Join G-Force to fight the greatest kaiju of all time when IDW Games releases the first-ever Godzilla Tabletop Roleplaying Game! Launching next March with a Kickstarter campaign, Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game reunites three Warhammer gaming legends – Jervis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe for their first co-created tabletop game! Godzilla puts a team of players in the midst of kaiju attacks with character sheets, collaboration, and playing cards as their tools to defend humanity.”

While we still don’t have a ton of details. The new game system will be using standard 52-card playing cards as the core mechanic. It’s an interesting choice, but one that might help put the emphasis on the various kaiju as forces of nature to be dealt with rather than monsters to be fought directly with lasers and tanks and such.

Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game also marks the first time that Warhammer legends Gav Thorpe, Mark Latham, and Jervis Johnson have all co-created a tabletop RPG. You can find out more about the game if you check out IDW’s page, linked below, and if you are headed to PAX Unplugged, you can catch a playtest preview of the game, which comes to Kickstarter next March.
