Pathfinder shows off two more new dragons, this time from the upcoming Draconic Codex. Good news, they made Vorpal Dragons.

Whoever Paizo put on dragon design for their latest spate of Pathfinder books is a GM’s friend, for sure. How else do you explain the kind of mind it takes to consider some of the most fearsome monsters in any manual, and then decide, “You know what? That needs to be sharper.” And that’s exactly what has happened, as Pathfinder shows off in a new preview of two dragons from the upcoming Draconic Codex book.

As the name suggests, this book will be your splatbook for dragons and dragon accessories in the world of Golarion. Which means that you get all sorts of things, from new dragon-centric player options (yaay) to new dragon types, including, as we get to see in a new preview from Paizo, the extremely sharp Vorpal Dragon (also yaay, but for adversarial reasons).

Let’s start with the new Vorpal Dragon. These are arcane dragons that happen to be manifestations of “sharpening magic.” They are said to have originated from a vorpal sword after it was used to strike the head from a jabberwocky with a palpable snicker-snack! And much like the sword that gave them their manifestation, vorpal dragons are great at getting right to the head of the matter.

That is to say, a vorpal dragon will take your head clean off. In fact, in some cases, it’s a little too clean. According to the new preview, vorpal dragons don’t always immediately kill someone when decapitating them. Younger vorpal dragons sometimes inadvertently leave a target alive, while adult vorpal dragons can decapitate someone and leave them alive at will. This is absolutely terrifying, but not nearly as much as their breath weapon.

In the new dragon preview, we learn that vorpal dragons don’t blast energies. Instead they inhale, draining blood from creatures in the area and inflicting void damage on targets. It’s even worse if you’re already bleeding when they hit you.

Coral dragons are the other dragon from today’s preview. These dragons are as much an ecosystem as they are a creature. They are obsessed with appearance, but rightfully so, for a coral dragon can make anyone lose their senses while gazing upon the dazzling patterns of the dragon’s reefs.

Some can even blind a creature entirely, as schools of colorful fish swarm out to block their visions. All of which goes to show you that even when you’re looking upon one of the most beautiful dragons you’ve ever seen, you’re still looking upon a dragon, and therefore not safe.
