Want a campaign that doesn’t end right when you’re starting to get to the good stuff? Here are five sprawling campaigns worth a look.

If you are the kind of DM that really loves digging in with a sprawling campaign that winds its way not just through the levels, but across the world, you know how difficult it can be to find something that you can sink your teeth into. There are a lot of shorter campaigns. Adventure modules that last a few sessions. But if you look even a little bit, you can find some long, sprawling campaigns that will keep your party playing for months, if not years.

Empire of the Ghouls

Empire of the Ghouls is one of Kobold Press’ best campaigns. It’s a dark one, for sure, but that’s the nature of the setting. This campaign is there in part to show off Kobold Press’ Midgard campaign setting, which draws on folklore for grittier subject matter. In the world of Midgard, you can find darkness anywhere. But it’s not just the heavier themes, there’s a lot of variety here. This campaign has political intrigue, non-combat challenges, plus fights that really challenge all but the most dedicated min/maxers. And it’s chock full of undead, as the name implies.

Call From The Deep

Call from the Deep is a pirate themed D&D campaign. It is full of swashbuckling swagger, and gives your party an opportunity to corsair their way across the Sword Coast. Despite not being a WotC-official book, this is set in the Forgotten Realms, so you can easily run it if you’re already playing there. If you like pirates, shipwrecks, sahuagin and ancient monsters best left deep below the ocean, you’ll find so much to chew on with this campaign.

Kingmaker 5E

Hear me out. Kingmaker is one of Pathfinder’s most beloved adventure paths. It’s the one where you get to carve out your own little kingdom and you have to deal with the troubles and trials associated with it. It’s a dream campaign for many a player or DM. And Paizo, some years back, did all the work of converting it to 5E. Of course, you might want to update the monsters a little with the new ruleset out, but for a campaign like this? It’s well worth the effort.

Dungeons of Drakkenheim

Dungeons of Drakkenheim is a lot like what if Warhammer’s Mordheim was a sprawling D&D campaign in a world under threat from eldritch abominations – only instead of Chaos, it’s eldritch horrors that rain down in meteorites, which are also conveniently enough a great way to power up your character and their gear. And instead of being a skirmish game, it’s a campaign with warring factions, intrigue, and dark secrets to investigate.

Odyssey of the Dragonlords

Odyssey of the Dragonlords is a fan-favorite 5E campaign. And right now, it’s Kickstarting for a newly improved 2024 edition, with hundreds of new pages of content, more monsters, revised subclass options, overhauled world maps and systems that let you track your players’ glory as their fame and fortune rises. This is a campaign that will have your PCs feeling like they are the protagonists in an epic. Or at least a really good BioWare game (in part because it’s written by many ex-BioWare developers, including James Ohlen and Drew Karpyshyn).

Happy adventuring!
