Let’s take a look at my efforts to build a Warhammer: the Old World Renegade Crowns army list, or three.
With the release of War of Settra’s Fury, GW managed to sneak a brand new army into the game. The Renegade Crowns are a cool and unique list from the Border Princes. They represent exiles, outcasts, outlaws, and mercenaries fighting in the region. It’s a super cool idea and one that grabbed me right off the bat. I’ve taken a look at the army and what it does here. But I’ve done more than look, I’ve started playing with and building lists.
It’s interesting to go into a brand new army, one with a lot more choices than Cathay, and build things with no real framework. To figure out “What Does This Army Do?” So today I wanted to take a look at a couple of Renegade Crown list ideas and how they might work.

How The List Works
One of the lists I’ve played around with a bit is what I call the Hammer and Anvil list. This is one I’ve actually gotten to play with and it really tries to make use of some combos. The anvil unit is the big unit of Sellswords in heavy armor forming the Phalanx. this unit is meant to tank and goes in a 4 formation. Into it goes the BSB, Prince on foot and the lvl 1 with illusion.
In most combats it should start with a base 11 on combat res. The unit also rocks a 3+ save in combat, while the LVL 1 is trying to cast Glittering Robes to make them -1 to hit. The goal here is to cut down on enemy combat res. Because the unit is only 4 wide there is no room for the bsb or lvl 1 in the front rank and they are placed in the rear rank, but still convey bonuses. The foot prince starts at -1 to be hit and if Robes is up he’s -2. Couple that with WS 8 and most things hit him on a 6, which once a game he make them re-roll. His job is to just tank things to the combat res can win you combat.
The Hammer
The hammer unit is the ambushing Outriders who are join by the other Prince and the Demonology wizard. They can come in an annoy the enemy with spells. Then if they get some buffs off they .can actually charge like heavy cav. Between demonology and the dark magic wizard You can get them up to 3 S5 ap-2 attacks, not shabby. I’ve found that reserve move and feigned flight on a medium cav unit are kind of fun.
Outside of that you’ve got another block to score objectives, a couple of detachments and cannons to annoy things and the ambushing Brigands to pull tricks. It’s an interesting list, btu it relies a lot of things going right for it. You need units to arrive at the proper time and spell combos to go off. I’ve had some fun and success with it, but I’m not sure it’s the final form.

How It Works
What if you just ambushed everything? That’s the question this army asks. Like the list before it, its got a big unit of Outriders (much bigger this time around) to dump characters and buff up to act as semi-heavy cav. It’s also got a bunch of skirmishing ambushers and annoying wizards to run around and shoot, dodge, and occasionally charge weak enemy units. Yes it’s a bit of a meme list, but I do think it would be fun to just… not deploy anything at all at the start of the game and see what you could do.

Picking The List
So this is a list I have not tried out, but it seems kind of fun. You’ll recognize the same big Phalanx unit with the same characters as the first list. This unit is going to push forward. It’s got two big detachments of crossbows that can do some ranged damage and also claim objectives. You’ve also got some Free Company to hold objectives. A couple of bombards do some damage. I threw in the machine gun wizard for fun, to rip off two magic missiles a turn a few shots.
The real fun here is the duo of the Doomseeker and Bonegrider. It really gives me a chuckle to make them fight on the same side! They’re there just to run forward and cause problems. For the Doomseeker, the plan is to have one of the demonology wizards toss Steed of Shadows on him to shoot him behind enemy lines, where he can then start chopping things up. (I’d also consider switching one wizard to Necromancy to use Spectral Steed instead, Ethereal Doomseeker?). Stead of Shadows can also be used to help shoot the Phalanx across the table. With all that, it’s a much more aggressive list than it appears at first, with some decent shooting to help it out. Crazy meta? No. But it could be fun and maybe decent. All in all, I’m still working on figuring this army out.
Let us know what you think about these lists, down in the comments!

Abe has decades of experience with a wide range of tabletop and RPG games, from historicals, to Star Wars to D&D and 40K. He has been contributing to BOLS since almost the start, back when he worked at and then owned a local gaming store. He used to be big into the competitive Warhammer tournament scene but age has mellowed him and he now appreciates a good casual match. He currently covers Warhammer: The Old World, as well as all things Star Wars, with occasional dabbling in other topics. Abe mourned over loss of WFB for its entire hiatus, but has been reborn like a gaming phoenix with Warhammer: The Old World.
