As the Draconic Codex creeps closer to its final release date, the Pathfinder team previews two more majestic and horrific dragons.
Famously, taunting dragons never works out. But what do you do when the dragon starts taunting you? That’s a question posed by a new dragon preview, delving once again into the pages of the upcoming Draconic Codex, due out for release soon. In fact, in this new preview, we get a look at two new dragons.
Both previews show off how Paizo has been Imagining Dragons lately. And I have to say, while I’m impressed, I’m also creeped out by the design of the new Mocking Dragon. But both it and the new Oath Dragon seem extremely cool.
Oath Dragon And Mocking Dragon – One Preview, Two Dragons
Let’s start with the Oath Dragon. These silvery-scaled dragons are fascinated by the power of words. Specifically with the power of promises. These dragons are innately tied to the idea of oaths, so much so that their bodies change as they swear solemn vows.
This often means an overwhelming dedication to a specific cause. When an oath dragon swears an oath, it binds their fate to their chosen companion. Every sworn oath is marked on the oath dragon’s body, causing one of their scales to turn red. Should that oath be broken, the red scale turns black. Oath dragons are highly devoted to their vows, even when it leads them down the path to villainy or destruction.
Oath dragons have a bunch of different abilities to help them in their quest to pursue their vows and avenge themselves if someone breaks an oath to them. Enemies on the receiving end of this dragon will find sharp claws and castigating breath, which deals spirit damage to its targets. And if you’ve broken an oath, the oath dragon can inflict the doomed condition on you, to help seal your fate.
And then there’s the Mocking Dragon. The name isn’t too bad. But, just take a look at the concept art.
That’s the last thing I want to see staring down at me from the mouth of a darkened cave, or flying over my head in any environ. But kudos to the art team for making something so scary and also cool. However, mocking dragons have more than just their looks going for them.
For one, they breathe laughing gas, just like the Joker does, I’m pretty sure. For two, they know how to heckle their opponents – past the point of emotional damage. Mocking dragons can inflict humiliating marks on their targets on a critical Strike, evoking the outcast’s curse spell. Mocking dragons can also spit out a glob of viscous goo that acts a lot like grease. Everything they need to inflict maximum chaos.
Look for both of these dragons in the upcoming Draconic Codex!
