More than villains lurk in the depths of the new Adventures in Faerun. You’ll also find a hoard of new magic items – here are some of our faves.
The Forgotten Realms abound with all sorts of items of magical power. From the mostly mundane to the mythical, you’ll find magic in just about every sort of trinket there is. But what else do you expect from a realm that’s been subjected to no less than a dozen magical cataclysms, with another one around the corner seemingly every week?
And in Adventures in Faerun, you can find a sampling of new magical items to delight the senses. Or at least, to fill out the loot tables. Here’s a look at some of the newly unearthed treasures from the annals of Adventures in Faerun.
Harper Pin

If you play at all in the Forgotten Realms, you’ve probably heard of the Harpers. They’re either noble heroes or meddlesome do-gooders, or a thorn in the side of you just trying to take over the Sword Coast and rule it as a tyrant-king, is that so wrong? They are known by their iconic Harper’s Pins. But few know their secret, these pins are powerful magical disguises, allowing a wearer to disguise themselves as a different “persona” (including alignment and creature type) from magic. The Silver pins let you devise a predetermined “surface thought”, while the Gold pins let you cast Nondetection with a permanent duration (or until you remove the pin).
Windskiff

A Windskiff appears as a humble piece of jewelry. But when you take a Magic action and spend one of its charge, the Windskiff expands, transforming into a sail-powered personal vehicle, roughly the size and shape of a household door with a 10 foot tall sail jutting out from its side. While transformed, the Windskiff hovers a few inches above whatever surface it’s on, and has a move speed of 40 ft. If you travel off of solid ground, it glides – moving 5 feet horizontally for every foot of height you have.
Crown of Horns

How about an artifact of terrible power? The Crown of Horns is one such example. It contains the essence and intelligence of Myrkul, the malevolent god of death kknown as the Lord of Bones. When he was slain by Mystra, the Crown of Horns was imbued with his dying essence. Now the Crown of Horns acts as a vessel for Myrkul’s will upon the face of the world.
It’s a cursed crown that will transform you into an undead creature devoted to Murkul. It takes a year, but if you are unable to remove the crown by the time a year has passed, you become a Lich. And if you use the Crown’s dark abilities to unleash a Cone of Undeath or cast Power Word Kill, there’s a 10 percent cumulative chance you instantly transform.
Mechanical Wonder

Mechanical wonders can be found throughout the Realms, though once they were the dominion of Lantan and Gond devotees almost exclusively. But they have since spread, as the ingenuity and craft of artificers has spread and grown. Now these humble trinkets help in shops and households everywhere.
Most are Domestic Wonders, which act as domestic servants mostly used to help with household duties. They cannot fight, but can be surprisingly resilient. Flying wonders, on the other hand, are mechanical companions that can play musical tunes and have blindsight out to 60 feet for scouting purposes. While Gyrocopters allow you and a few friends to fly (however many you can fit into a Huge object).
Orb of Damara

A magical orb created by the Wizard Damara, this magical artifact was so potent it terrified its creator into not only not using it, but also sealing himself away in a tomb of rock and stone so that no one could get to the artifact. Which is perhaps for the est, because it gives someone the powers of a dragon, including fiery breath, an aura of fear, and the power of flight.
But most importantly, it lets you trasform into an adult chromatic dragon. Now. You aren’t in control of your own actions, you simply become a dragon unleashed upon the world. In game terms, you’re a chromatic dragon under the control of the DM. Now it’s clear why Damara tried to seal it away.
