Take a look at all the cool new Warhammer: The Old World Common Magic items from the Razing of Westerland.
The Razing of Westerland is the newest Arcane Journal for Warhammer: The Old World. And it just might be the best. Now I took at a look at all the cool things in the book the other week, you can check that out here. The book includes a large section of new magic items, and in an awesome move these are items can be taken by anyone. Or at least anyone who uses items, sorry Dwarves and Daemons. This list contains a ton of bangers. So today lets look at all the new items and how they might change your list.
Magic Weapons
Cackling Blade
This weapon gives you a nice +d6 attacks at +1s and AP -1. While it’s pricy at 65 pts it can give you just a ton of attacks, and if that is what you want it works well for that. You’ll even still have some points leftover for armor/ward. Now you do lose a wound if you roll a 6 for the extra attacks, but you still get those attacks. That means this is best dumped on a character with a decent number of wounds. A Bret Duke with this baby for instance could rock in with 5+d3+d6 attacks.
Meteor Hammer
AP -3 and always wounding on a 3+ is a pretty cool weapon to strap on a low S character, especially one that has a decent number of attacks. 50 pts means you can drop this on a hero and it has a decent shot of hurting Dragon Lords. This seems like a great options for a Doppelganger wizard.
Hell-Forge Axe
I think this one is a bit of a skip for me. 30 pts isn’t too pricy, but its doesn’t get you very much with just S+1, Ap-1 and Armor Bane (3). Flaming Attacks is actually almost as much of a downside as a buff. It’s not horrible, but most armies have a better option.
Sword of Sorrow
I’ve taken to calling this weapon the Sword That Is Not A Sword, and I love it. This blade is actually a ranged weapon, with a decent stat line at 30″ range, S Ap -1 and AB 2 and multi wounds 2. You also can’t take ward or regen saves vs it. That’s a nice little package to put on a hero with decent BS And have them plink away at enemies. For only 30 pts its easy to fit in and fun. For armies that already have a magic ranged weapon, such as Empire, it really lets you double down on that.
Magic Armour
Levitating Shield
This is one of the more basic choices here. It’s a 25 pt. shield that you can use even if you are using a two handed weapon. That’s it. It’s not crazy and pretty situational (can also only be taken by infantry) but sometimes you just really want/need that extra bit of armor.
Trailblazer’s Hauberk
This is the first of the option on here that I think is really transformative. This is a 20 pt suit of heavy armor that can only be taken by infantry. It gives the wearer Move Through Cover and Scouts. Now Move Through Cover is pretty whatever, but Scouts is really big. This basically allows any foot combat character to gain Scout and I think there are a lot of armies that can play around with that.
Talismans
Wrong Talisman! (Though it is pretty magical)
Icon of Fortitude
This is for infantry and cav only and makes you immune to multiple wounds for 35 pts. It’s generical useful though not ground breaking. Great on monstrous cav heroes that have a decent chunk of wounds.
Ironhide Talisman
Probably the oddest item on the list. The wording here is very odd, but basically enemies who roll to hit you have to re-roll wound rolls of a 6. Not to hit, but to wound. It just doesn’t work vs attacks that auto hit. And like… eh meh? It’s locked to infantry only and could be useful if you somehow have a T5/T6 infantry hero, but I think its not great.
Magic Standards
Banner of the Steadfast
This is a very interesting one. It’s 50 pts and infantry only, but lets you Fall Back In Good Order even if you are double outnumbered and would normally be forced to break. In some ways this is like having Stubborn that never goes away. Though it is a bit riskier as you still need to make the test.
I think if you stick this on a high LD unit with a re-roll (like a BSB nearby) it will make them really hard to break. On the other hand… it’s only useful if you are losing combat for several rounds a game. So you have to ask yourself if you really want to get a lot of use out of it.

Totem of Wrath
Here is one that speaks to my heart. People are calling this the choppa banner as it gives a unit 1 better AP and re-rolling 1s to wound on the charge. For 50 pts its not cheap, but that is really good. Especially on either a unit with a lot of attacks or something like lance armed knights. Lots of volume lets you buff a ton of attacks, but heavy knights with this will basically mean that every hit is going to kill someone. I’ll be taking this a lot.
Banner of Swirling Wind
30 pts and gives a unit -1 to be hit from shooting. Very generical useful. I think you’ll see this one a lot out there. BS shooting is a lot more common then it used to be and this is a great counter. Especially if you have a way to give the unit another -1, such as Glittering Robes, you can basically make yourself immune to most BS shooting.
Monster Hunter’s Tapestry
25 pts and you can’t be stomped on. This is a really good banner. It’s cheap enough that any unit that can take a magic banner can take it. While it’s only good if you face things with stomp its really good vs them. This will basically let most ranked up units auto win vs a monster and can be big if you have a character in a unit challenging out a large monster. I think we will see this a lot.
Enchanted Items
Arch-Lighting Rod
This is a generic Falcon Horn (something I’ve said should be added for over a year). 40 pts, one use, take an LD test and the enemy can’t Fly for a turn. This is a really solid item and can put the hurt on the enemy. Giving it to everyone is at least a bit of a nerf for Cathay Lanterns. It also means that the factions that already have a no-fly item can shut down Fly for 2 turns if they really want to lean into that.
Potion of Fervour
Like the other potions this is one use only and drunk in your command phase. At 30 pts its not cheap but it does give you d3 extra attacks, though sadly those only last till the end of that turn, not round. It’s a nice way to spike a character’s damage output on a “go turn”, but probably not really worth it.
Becalming Orb
Pretty cheap at only 20 pts, this is a 1 use only bound spell that makes enemy casting within 15″ increase their casting value by 2. This could be a nice item to take if you don’t have any wizards and just want make it harder for the enemy to cast for a turn. However its a bound spell with only a +1 to cast, meaning it’s going to fail to cast a lot and get dispelled a lot, and it has a pretty shot effect range. This is on the cusp of being good, but seems like it might be a miss.
Arcane Items
Staff of Quietude
This is a really great item. It’s 35 pts and if you pass a LD test (in your command phase) all Remains in Play spells are dispelled. Now this will dispel your own as well, so you don’t want it in an army that uses a lot of them. It is a bit more situational of an item, and does compete for valuable Arcane item slots, but it can be really powerful and just shut down some builds.
This is item is really one that’s going to shine or not depending on your meta. It’s not always an auto include, but it will be great vs some builds. If you find yourself having trouble with those builds well this is the item for you.
Scroll of Disruption
30 pts and once a turn you can re-roll a dispel roll. Yeah, that’s solid. If you are looking for a way to boost your dispels this is great. Not a ton to say here but solid.
Tome of Spellcraft
The twin to the above scroll, the Tome lets you once a turn (for 30 pts) re-roll a casting roll. That is super generically useful and pretty much any wizard can benefit from this. It’s really great for a the large number of wizards out there who are around to just cast one specific spell (normally a signature) making them a lot more reliable. I think you’ll see this item a lot.
Let us know what you think of the new items and how they might change your list, down in the comments!
