The Kickstarter for the second batch of Fighting Fantasy game books (volumes 6-10) has a week left on its phenomenal Kickstarter.

Fighting Fantasy is a gaming classic. These books introduced a whole generation to fantasy gaming. Since they were first published by Steve Jackson (not that onel, and then in) and Sir Ian Livingstone, the books have sold millions worldwide. And it’s not hard to see why.

These are leveled up, sprawling books where you choose the adventure that is your own. Only it’s not just a “flip to page 238 and discover how you died.” There’s a whole rpg system here. You’ll have your own character stats and gear and can even level up. You might get into fights – fights you aren’t guaranteed to win.

Now Sir Ian Livingstone has teamed up with Steve Jackson (American) of Steve Jackson Games to Kickstart a second wave of the updated version of the books, following a phenomenally successful Kickstarter earlier this year. This Kickstarter for volume 2 of Fighting Fantasy sees the release of books 6-10.

Don’t worry too much about the “update” if you are a fan of the old system. Updated here means mostly a change to the published format. The old art, the familiar systems won’t be changing.

What is changing then? Well, the original Fighting Fantasy printings in the United States were smaller paperbacks. You could fit ’em in a backpack by the sackful. As Livingstone and Jackson say in the Kickstarter, “perfect to enjoy during lunch at school, but a smidge harder to jump into by modern standards.”

“The Fighting Fantasy series features epic fantasy adventures where you are the hero. In each book, your character’s life depends a bit on luck . . . but mostly on the decisions you make. Will you triumph . . . or meet a sad fate?

Steve Jackson Games – helmed by the American game designer Steve Jackson (no relation) – has continued to work closely with Sir Ian Livingstone to deliver a spellbinding Fighting Fantasy experience for fans in the United States.”

The new versions will have larger text, for one. And they will be in the UK “B-format” size. Still paperback, but with a unified look and feel, as well as enhanced formatting that makes them easier to read.

So strap in Fighting Fantasy fans. There are still eight days left in the Kickstarter. Help close this year out with a bang!

Steve Jackson and Steve Jackson, together again!
