As Warhammer: The Old World moves into it’s third year with 2026, it’s time to take a look at what we want to see moving forward from GW.
2025 is all done and wrapped up. We’ve seen what it had to offer and over all it was good. After all it bought our beloved game back to us! But now we are moving into 2026 and the third year of The Old World. At the start of last year we took at a look at what we wanted out of the secound year of ToW, and we got, well pretty much all of those. It really was a stellar year. But it now it’s time to look forward and talk about what we’d like to see come in 2026 and ToW’s third year.
Another Big Release (Kislev!)
So I think this is a pretty obvious want for the year. Last year saw the release of a brand new army in Cathay, and that was awesome (despite some balance issues). So it obvious we’d love to see another army come out this year. Kislev is the most obvious choice as its been teased a bit and would be in high demand. As a bit of a lesser choice the a big release of one of the Legacy0 factions into the game would be nice. This could either be in its classic form, or something a bit different such as Vampire Coast.
Continued Strive For Balance
While ToW is in a pretty good place, there is still always work to be done. We’d really like to see 2026 continue the push for better balance in the game. This can be done through FAQs/Errata’s, and also through more event books like the Matched Play Guide. It does seem like GW is on board with this plan as they’ve mentioned regular updates and indeed we should be getting one any day now.
Official Old World Events
One thing that has been really missing from The Old World is official GW events. While most of the other big games get some support at the larger events and have a kind of “GW Gold Standard” For events, ToW doesn’t. The only official events are a handful that you can play at Warhammer World in the UK. While you can argue that GW taking over the whole event scene would be bad and force more standardization than a lot of people want, I’d still like to see at least a handful of official events we could go to.
A Developing Narrative
2026 really is the year of the unknown for Old World. All the armies are out now. In effect the game is “released”. Given that we don’t really know where it’s going to go or what they are going to do with it. It seems clear that GW is dedicated to supporting the game and producing more content for it. It also seems pretty clear that its not time for a 2nd Edition or redoing the armies we already got. One option for where the game goes of course is another new army as we talked about before.
However the other direction, and these are likely to both happen, is for the games narrative to develop. The Arcane Journals have started to tease a more overarching story that’s being told. While most of them have kind of been stand alone we do have a couple that deal with the twin story lines of the fighting in Westerland (Choas, Empire and Catahy) and Settra’s invasion of the Border Princes. We also know that all of these eventually leads up to The Great War Against Chaos. I’d hopping this year will see these stories tied together a bit more with some of the other stands floating out there.
More Classic Sculpts
One of the really cool things about ToW has been the ability for GW to delve deep into their back catalogue and re-release old classic models. While most of these come out in a limited Made-To-Order format, its still cool to get them at all. I really hope that GW keeps doing this even now that all the armies are out. There are still a ton of great models they could bring back as limited releases. They can also do 2nd (or 3rd etc.) runs of the ones they already put out. The War Wagon for instance needs another run badly (or to just be a normal stocked item, crazy that it’s not). We actually got some great news just as I was writing as GW announced a new run of Chaos made-to-order. Lets hope it keeps up!
Let us know what you’d like to see out of the year, down in the comments!
Don’t Miss:
Abe is that rare thing, an Austin local born and raised here. Though he keeps on moving around, DC, Japan, ETC., he always seems to find his way back eventually. Abe has decades of experience with a wide range of tabletop and RPG games, from historicals, to Star Wars to D&D and 40K. He has been contributing to BOLS since almost the start, back when he worked at and then owned a local gaming store. He used to be big into the competitive Warhammer tournament scene but age has mellowed him and he now appreciates a good casual match. He currently covers Warhammer: The Old World, as well as all things Star Wars, with occasional dabbling in other topics. Abe mourned over loss of WFB for its entire hiatus, but has been reborn like a gaming phoenix with Warhammer: The Old World.
