There’s a new sourcebook out for the Twilight Imperium RPG using the Genesys system. In Ships of the Shattered Empire, fleets muster!
First things first, there’s a Twilight Imperium RPG. Of course there is. It seems obvious, and we needn’t wonder why there isn’t one; it already exists, and we all definitely know about it already. At least that’s what I’m telling myself, who definitely didn’t learn about it today when the release of a new supplement for the RPG that has, apparently, been around since 2023 (!) crossed my inbox.
So yeah, let’s talk about Ships of the Shattered Empire for the Twilight Imperium RPG using the Genesys system from Edge Studios.
Ships of the Shattered Empire – A New Book For The Twilight Imperium We All Knew About
And hey, on the off chance that you, somehow, didn’t know about the Twilight Imperium RPG, let this be the place you learn about it. It uses the Genesys system from Edge Studio – you might recognize this as the symbol-covered-dice-driven RPG that lies at the heart of the most recent Star Wars RPG, which you can find in Edge of Empire and Force and Destiny and a number of other sourcebooks.
It’s a ton of fun, if you can come to grips with the dice system. There’s a lot of “interpreting the symbols” but for me, that’s where the story lies. You roll the dice and then talk abut what it means and translate that into the fiction. It’s not as clear-cut as a D&D-alike, but it is much crunchier than you’d think. Don’t think of this as a “fiction-first” system. But it does have some places where the mechanics encourage the players to narrate a bit.
And in the Twilight Imperium RPG, whose sourcebook is linked at the end of the article as well, you play as one of the Keleres. These are the special agents of the Galactic Council, tasked with dealing with threats to the safety of the galaxy as a whole. Kind of like Mass Effect’s Spectres but with more factional infighting, and the ruins of the once-proud galactic empire are way more a central theme.
Which brings us to the new book, Ships of the Shattered Empire. This sourcebook is all about the fistfuls of tiny plastic starships and warsuns you used to hurl across the map at your friends’ burgeoning empires in the tabletop board game. And now, the RPG sourcebook adds a ton of new vehicles, as well as new rules for space combat, mass battles, and other more Twilight Imperium-y actions.
“Three thoousand years ago, the Twilight Wars tore the galaxy apart. The fleets of the great powers ravaged the Lazax Empire, shattering civilization even as they destroyed themselves. Now, as those powers climb out of the ashes and prepare to reclaim their title as ‘Great Civilizations,’ armadas of warships once again gather in the sky above their home
AdvertisementShips of the Shattered Empire is a comprehensive sourceook for starships and vehicles in the Twilight Imperium universe.”
If you want an RPG that captures the feeling of the Twilight Imperium universe, be sure and check out both Ships of the Shattered Empire and the Embers of the Imperium sourcebooks, linked below. If you’re looking for those delicious Mass Effect vibes in your TTRPG, this is probably where you’ll find the best example of ’em. You will, however, need a copy of the Genesys corebook.
And once again, we all probably knew about this RPG already and aren’t about to try it for the first time!
