Adam Warlock is coming to Marvel: Crisis Protocol as an impressive Threat 7 character. Let’s see if he brings the heat to the tabletop!
If you’re only experience with Adam Warlock is the Guardians of the Galaxy III movie or Marvel Rivals, well, you’re missing out. He was a massive part of the Infinity Gem/Gauntlet storyline and he sort of ends up being an “anti-Thanos” in a way. Why? “Because Comics!” which is to say it’s more complicated than that…but it’s certainly an interesting read if you ever get the chance!
Anyhow, you’re probably here because you want to get a look at his rules for Marvel: Crisis Protocol. So let’s dive into what this “perfect being” can actually do — and if he’s really worth 7 Threat!
Adam Warlock In Marvel: Crisis Protocol
So yes, he’s a Threat 7 but stat-wise he doesn’t seem that crazy. Defensively he’s a 3/4/3 with 7/8 Stamina. So a total of 15 Stamina on both side but he’s got some more tricks up his sleeves. We’ll cover those a little later. Let’s go over his attacks first.
His basic builder is his Karmic Blast. This attack is range 3 at 6 dice and is energy based. Also, for each wild, you trigger the Sap Power effect. Adam Warlock can really get juiced up on his turn with this blast. His next attack is his spender. Quantum Bolt costs 5 energy but it’s a range 4 attack for 9 dice! Furthermore, after the attack is resolved, if the target is size 4 or less you get to throw them Medium which could net you even more damage. On top of that, wild results trigger the Avatar of Life ability. This generates healing for allies and you can choose a character within range to remove 1 damage or special condition.
Now, before we dive into his other abilities I wanted to point out three things. First, he’s got Flight and is a Gem Bearer which you can see above. But he’s also got Being of Immeasurable Power. This helps him defensively with a flat 1 damage reduction and it also allows him to hold TWO Infinity Gems instead of just one. That’s important because of the third thing you should know. One of the Infinity Gems you’re likely going to take this one:
This is a special Bonded Soul Gem specific to Adam Warlock. Note that it’s basically free for him to take as well. That’s important and it’s also why he’s a Threat 7 base. Keep in mind that Infinity Gems also grand the wielder an extra power in the power phase which will help with the rest of his (somewhat) expensive kit. On top of that, it’s got a nice effect as it prevents allies from losing energy due to enemy effects and it also allows Adam to Heal when a non-Grunt is Dazed or KO’d. That’s pretty handy. Suddenly that 7/8 stamina total isn’t seeming so bad.
As for the rest of his abilities you’ve got Universal Translation for 2 energy. This one is a range 2 place. Not too flashy but very useful. Also for 2 energy is his Cosmic Energy Construct which allows him to shield himself or an ally within range 4 by an attack. This gives him 2 extra defense dice in that roll.
Finally, he’s got Chronokinesis for 4 energy and this power is weird. It’s not unlike the one we saw on Kang the Conqueror “leak” yesterday. Basically, it’s going to cause the attacker and defender to re-roll all their dice for an attack sequence. It happens at the END of the Modify Dice step.
And once again, without getting too technical, this just means both players are rerolling their entire dice pools. It’s not a full reset of the attack but it’s a great way to avoid massive spike or embarrassing whiff.
New Guardians of the Galaxy Leadership
One last thing: Adam Warlock is also bringing a new Leadership ability to the Guardians of the Galaxy!
This one is actually kind of crazy. There’s two things going on here. First there’s the whole Dice-Swap mechanic which I do like. You could use this to move around blocks and hits which is handy. Or Skulls if you have a character that can use them! But there’s also the last sentence which allows Adam Warlock to use specific Infinity Gem powers without paying the energy cost. Now, I’ll be honest, I haven’t really dabbled with the Infinity Gems too much. But now? Adam Warlock is giving me a really good reason to re-read them and take them out for a test drive!
