Evil Hat announced that Blades in the Dark: Deep Cuts is available now! The title that began as a community update for the titular gaslamp game of wraiths and wrongdoers, published by John Harper, has since expanded, thanks to a big BackerKit campaign for both a beautiful new hardcover version of the book. A hardcover version, which is available now, according to an announcement on Bluesky.
Blades in the Dark: Deep Cuts
Blades in the Dark: Deep Cuts is a 128-page hardcover book packed with updated, streamlined, modernized rules tweaks. It isn’t a second edition – though, I hope that John Harper decides to make one at some point, after all, with the Deep Cuts rules you get a much friendlier experience. It feels like it addresses a lot of the early bumps and stresses of the initial ruleset. But, I suppose, with Deep Cuts, you don’t have to slot in everything new all at once.
It’s a suite of modular rules tweaks for BitD that let you change the game to your preference. You can use the ones you want, ignore the ones you don’t, and get your crew back in action fast. With updates to everything from Harm and Healing to Actions and Teamwork, there’s plenty to love. And Deep Cuts makes that so much clearer.
Deep Cuts provides some explicit clarity around certain rules. In particular, if you’ve been using the Threat Rolls and Teamwork rules, the expansion gives some clear-cut use cases, as well as additional flexibility. GMs and Players will find a lot to tinker with. If you love getting in under the hood of a game or just having new options, this book has you covered.
Deep Cuts is more than just rules, though. It’s a substantive expansion for Blades in the Dark. The book introduces a new Advancement system, as well as the better gear system. I can’t imagine going back to the way vanilla BitD handles those.
You can find what you’ll fall in love with in the new expansion. And this is your chance to grab a hardcover version of the rules and take them for a spin. It’ll look great on your shelf.
So look for Blades in the Dark: Deep Cuts online or on a shelf near you soon!
See you in Doskvol!
