I don’t know if Games Workshop is just saving these for a rainy day or they just don’t want to give players Aeldari Exodites.
The Aeldari are getting some cool new units soon with the updated Corsairs. Even Prince Yriel is getting in on the action which is great. However, I feel like GW has been sitting on an obvious Aeldari option for a long time: The Exodites.
The Exoditesare the Aeldari who abandoned their homeworlds before the Fall, establishing new cities on Maiden Worlds of the Eldar Empire in order to escape the growing decadence of their civilization. Protected from Slaanesh‘s predation by their World Spirits, they purposefully live a physically rigorous life, expressing the intensity of their aeldari nature through a powerful loyalty to their clans and a strong determination to achieve the clan’s objectives.
Bring On The Exodites
The Exodites aren’t a “new” thing either. They’ve been around before. At one point in the early days of Warhammer 40,000 there were even Exodite Knights!
They was even a playable unit for them in Codex: Eldar 2nd Edition. They never got an official unit but there were sketches of them riding “dragons” (which look a whole lot like dinosaurs to me).
So where did they go and why won’t GW bring them back? I feel like dino-riding Aeldari is a great way for GW to print more money personally. It really seems like a no brainer.
Aside from fan conversions and other long forgotten art there’s really not much else to go on. That said, they do have a good chunk of lore. We have a good idea about their society. For example we know they are “more primitive” than their spacefaring kin but they still use the same technology — they just aren’t quite as reliant on it.
We also know how they want to defend their Maiden Worlds. These worlds are “untamed and dangerous” and the Exodites seem to thrive on them. Shoot, we’ve even seen them pop-up fairly recently within the Ynnari ranks although they are counted as rare. They also don’t shy away from contact with the craftworlds like the Siam-Hann or Biel-tan.
While I know that new armies don’t come along very often from GW, the Exodites seem like a really great way to do just that. The Corsairs might have the spotlight now but I feel like the Exodites are just waiting in the wings, waiting for someone at Games Workshop to go “oh yeah, we DO have those dino-riding Eldar!”
I want to live in a world where it’s not “one or the other” between Corsairs and Exodites. It should be a “both and” situation…
