Apparently, the Math Involved in Accurately Tabulating Mana Totals Wasn’t Challenging Enough for Combo Players?

Wizards of the Coast revealed a new card from Secrets of Strixhaven that added exponents as a game mechanic to Magic: The Gathering

Higher-level mathematical skills will soon be required to play Magic: The Gathering. In the early days, Magic math was simple. Players were essentially tasked with adding up mana produced from lands for mana costs, subtracting from and adding to life totals, tallying up damage against power and toughness of creatures, and applying the occasional +1 or -1 modifier. The most complicated math ever became in the early days was tabulating the mana cost of a game-winning Channel into a Fireball.

WotC decided to up the ante a bit on the use of mathematics in the Secrets of Strixhaven set by adding exponents into card text as a game mechanic. They spoiled the Mathemagics card, which allows a target player to draw 2X cards. It is unclear whether or not this is the only card in the set that uses exponents as part of its card text. However, it is clear that Commander players may let out an audible groan at the tabletop if Mathemagics ever gets cast as part of a High Tide combo.

WotC also spoiled three more cards for Secrets of Strixhaven (see below).
