HBO is making a Baldur’s Gate TV series, which will continue the story from the Baldur’s Gate 3 video game. Deadline was the first to report news of the new show, which is being developed by The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin. Unlike The Last of Us, which adapted the first two video games of the same name, Baldur’s Gate will be a new storyline featuring a mix of characters from Baldur’s Gate 3 and new characters.

Said Mazin to Deadline, “After putting nearly 1000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of The Coast created. I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”

While details about the show are scant, it appears that the show will feature a cast of new characters who “aren’t that powerful” and have them interact with the much stronger protagonists of Baldur’s Gate 3. Mazin is expected to reach out to the cast of Baldur’s Gate 3 for potential ways to participate in the new series.

This is the second Dungeons & Dragons TV show currently in development. Netflix is working on a Forgotten Realms television series, although there’s been no update on that show in quite some time. Shawn Levy is producing that show, and the two will share a common world with each other.
