The Imperial Knights have a new Battalion Box for the Eye of Terror and it seems like a good start.
When it comes to starter boxes the Imperial Knights have always been a very strange beast. Sure, they technically have a Combat Patrol option. Which is really just a pair of Armigers. But considering how deadly a pair of Armigers can be I wouldn’t underestimate them. That said, with the coming of the Eye of Terror Campaign, GW is unleashing a new Battalion Box and we’re taking a quick look at it today. This might actually be the best entry point for an Imperial Knight army. So let’s get into it.

Total Individual MSRP = $295
So once again, we don’t know the final price on these boxes. But we can start with a 30% discount which is roughly what GW likes to price these boxes around. That would Basically put this one at $200. I could see GW doing that for this box but I could also see them putting it in the $225-$250 ballpark as well. Still, if these DO come in at $200, I don’t see a reason you wouldn’t go for this box vs a single Knight Valiant. You’re essentially getting the Armigers for $5 which seems like a STEAL to me.
Again, those prices aren’t verified. That said, if you know you’re getting $295 worth of GW miniatures in the box, you can do the math when the final price point comes back and see the savings yourself.
Starting An Imperial Knights Army
I think this boxed set is absolutely a great way to jumpstart a new Imperial Knight army. First off, all of those kits are loaded with options. You could build them as alternate options like the Knight Castellan and Armiger Helverins if you choose. In fact, I could see people picking up two of these boxes for that very reason. The Knight Valiant/Castellan are both 410 points and the Armigers are 140/135 each depending on how you build them. If you maxed out the points you’d already be at 1380 points right there.
Imperial Knights do have a bit of a limited pool of options to add. However, this box would also make a good option if you wanted to slot in some Imperial Knights into another army. Like the Adeptus Mechanicus for example. There’s some creative ways to do that.
All that to say, even with a limited pool of Knights to choose from, you could easily point out a 2000 point army around this box. I mean you’re looking at a base point cost of 690 if you just build these units from the image of the battalion. You’ve got another 1310 points to play with. If you just went for “regular” Knights you could basically fit another 3 Knights in there. Any spare points you could round out with Armigers or Detachment Enhancements.
The real question is how much do you want to spend ($$$) on Knight kits… But that’s up to you. Obviously if you’re serious about starting a Knight Army you should get the Codex and start pointing things out properly.
So The Battalion Is Good, Right?
Overall, I think it’s a good option to start the army. I think that much is clear. This box offers options on both sides of the Imperial Knight Spectrum. You’ve got one of the hardest hitters in the game mixed with two of the “small” Knights which can still go heads-up with the majority of units out there. While I’ve personally got mixed feelings about even having Knights in 40k I also accept the fact that they are part of the game. So yeah, if you want to play with some of the BIGGEST Stompy Robots out there, well, this box is for you.
Imperial Knights aren’t my cup of tea. But even I can see this box could be a good deal for fans of Imperial Knights.
