According to Hugo Sweetwater, he’s been an entertainer and renowned artist since the day he was born. This boisterous halfling claims that on the evening of his birth, a fortune teller took a long, searching gaze skyward, studied the stars, and prophesied that Hugo would one day write the greatest epic story ever told. Is it true? Well, not yet, but Hugo swears he’ll make it happen.

Hugo comes from an extended family of entertainers. His parents and siblings are part of a traveling carnival filled with artists and performers of every ilk. His mother is an acrobat. His father serves as master of ceremonies on the main stage and sketches caricatures of carnival guests between shows. Hugo himself discovered at a very young age that he had a knack for storytelling.

However, his skill goes beyond prose. His ability to capture and hold an audience’s attention draws on arcane forces, and he uses those to craft powerful illusions to lend a visual element to the tales he weaves. With this set of magical skills at his disposal, Hugo became a major attraction of the carnival, drawing teeming crowds at every stop.

While Hugo loved the attention—indeed, he needs that audience, for he fears being alone—he grew disenchanted with carnival life. The traveling show repeatedly visited the same circuit, and Hugo feared he was missing out on much more in the world. He knows the epic he is prophesied to create must be drawn from life experiences, and he knew he needed more experience!

Recently, Hugo finally took that fateful step. During yet another routine performance at a crossroads town of middling size, he met a group of adventurers, the Valiant 6, who seemed intent on his presentation. After the show, the band approached him to praise his magical prowess and inquire whether he would be available to assist them with a task that would require some subtlety and misdirection. They believed his skill with illusions and his ability to sway an audience would fit with their needs.

Hugo jumped at the chance. He played his part, deviously distracting a handful of guards so successfully that they never connected the events to the band of adventurers—or the carnival—at all. The other members extracted some stolen goods that had been under the guards’ protection, and the entire escapade went off without a hitch.

Hugo was thrilled at his role in the caper, and he desperately wanted to do it again. He broached the subject of joining the group and plying his trade on further adventures. Recognizing the value of his talents, the Valiant 6 accepted him into the fold. He knew he had found his path forward toward fulfilling his prophecy. Bidding his extended carnival family goodbye, Hugo set out on a grand adventure, and he hasn’t regretted it for a second.
