So, I am not saying that some creative projects are cursed, but the Vigilante’s Handbook for Mutants & Masterminds has a good case for it. Originally commissioned prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the book weathered business shut-downs, went through a change in M&M Developers, two Trump administrations, and an announced change in editions. A true child of the mean streets, it got pushed aside for other priorities, and completion and release was delayed so often that M&M fans joked that even saying the book’s name would only delay it further, and began calling it “The Scottish Handbook” in honor of Shakespeare’s famously cursed “Scottish Play.”
So you can imagine my pleasure to announce that the “curse of the Scottish Handbook” has been broken and the Vigilante’s Handbook is, at long last, complete and available for pre-order!
If you want to buy the PDF edition or pre-order the print edition and add-on the PDF right now, just follow this link and you don’t have to read about the book or our plans any further. I understand.
Now, for those of you who are still here. A few things:
First, because the Vigilante’s Handbook was planned before the upcoming new edition of Mutants & Masterminds, I will note that it will be the last official third edition product for the game. Given that, Green Ronin has wisely decided to do a small print run. How small? That depends on you. Essentially, the plan is to take the pre-order numbers, including from our distributors, and print an amount to fulfill those, with a small amount left over for direct online sales thereafter. In short, if you want the book, you should pre-order or, or ask your favorite local game store to order it, because it will go out of print fairly quickly.
Second, if you’re not familiar with the Vigilante’s Handbook and you’re wondering what the big deal is about, I’ll direct you to the book’s product page to get all of the details. In short, it is a third edition Mutants & Masterminds sourcebook on street-level superheroes, and includes a complete setting for Earth-Prime in the city of Ferroburg, detailed by former M&M Developer Crystal Frasier. Even if you’re not using the third edition of the game, I think the book is worthwhile for the genre advice and setting material alone, and it is all you’re going to see on Ferroburg for a while, apart from a summary in the upcoming Earth-Prime Gazetteer.
Lastly, because Vigilante’s Handbook is the last M&M third edition book, some might ask: “Will it be included in the M&M Third Edition Mega-Bundle?” The short answer is: Not yet. Perhaps, sometime down the road, once the book has sold through its print run and had an opportunity to, you know, actually make it past breaking-even, possibly. (Again, if you’re unfamiliar with the M&M Third Edition Mega-Bundle, follow the link.)
The Vigilante’s Handbook was not planned as the swan-song for the longest running edition of Mutants & Masterminds to-date, but it is a good one, and a book I’m very proud to bring to you. Get it and give the heroes at your table an opportunity to make some justice out on the mean streets!
