Mechs (sort of) are a bold new feature of the updated Artificer subclass, the Armorer, featured in the latest Unearthed Arcana.
Armorer is one of the most popular subclasses for Artificers. And in the updated Artificer’s Unearthed Arcana, Armorers get a big boost in the form of a big robot. No really.
But on top of a new mech that you can ride around in, there’s plenty more for Armorers to love. So, let’s take a look at the updated Unearthed Arcana Armorer. Iron Man isn’t the only thing it does anymore.
The Unearthed Arcana Armorer – Big Robots, Better Armor
Now, a few things to keep in mind. This is still a playtest, and while Armorers do have an exciting new feature, it’s important to take the whole subclass into account. Some of the features are still a little lackluster, but the shiny new one really helps make a difference.
Armorers are all about making magical armor that leans pretty quickly into fantasy power armor territory. This is all thanks to a feature called Arcane Armor. With Arcane Armor, you can transform any regular suit of armor into Arcane Armor, which then becomes bonded to your skin Iron Man style.
This feature lets you pick an “armor model” that enables you to customize your Arcane Armor into one of three different models. The two that were there previously, Guardian and Infiltrator, do pretty much what you’d think. Guardian is all about frontline brawling.
In the new Unearthed Arcana, Armorers who take the Guardian option will enjoy a boosted Defensive Field, which lets you take a Bonus Action to gain temporary hit points as long as you’re bloodied.
But the real big shiny new toy is the Dreadnaught Armor Model. This is a fully kitted-out new subclass option that basically lets you get into a mech. Your Dreadnaught lets you become Large and at higher levels, Huge) during a fight, and gives you a giant flail that you can swing around and use to push and pull creatures around on the battlefield. You can even gain a Fly speed at 15th level..
Aside from that, the subclass isn’t too different. All the features are still in the same spot and either do the same thing they always did or work just a little better. Dreadnaught is going to be a ton of fun for people with a desire for a very specific kind of mayhem. And I’m here for it.
Now you, too, can turn your games of D&D into surprise games of Mechwarrior!
