Take a look at the recent LVO winning list for Warhammer: The Old World, and why it works.
This last weekend saw LVO (the Las Vegas Open) 2025 take place. LVO is one of the top wargaming events in the world. The 40K Grand Tournament had over a thousand players, making it (I’m pretty sure) the largest in the world. But LVO isn’t just 40K, there are a lot of other events there as well. There was of course a large Warhammer: The Old World event there. With 70 players this was one of the larger events we’ve seen for Old World and a true GT. When the dust had settled on six epic rounds of The Old World, only one list remained undefeated. Blue Ford, of Squarehammer, with his Bretonnian Exiles managed to go 6-0 and clinch Best General. Meanwhile Myles ONeill (That two Ls) took best overall after going 4-2. A great showing for both, but today lets take a list at the list no one could beat!

How The List Works
Now overall this is a pretty standard Brettonian Exiles list, not unlike what I took to NOVA. I think most people who have been following tournaments or the meta will understand how it works. The core of the list is really in it’s very powerful characters. These guys are going to do a lot of heavy lifting. One thing of note is that the list does eschew any magic and focuses only on combat characters. It’s goal really is to be fast enough that magic won’t matter much.
Both Barons and the the BSB can join up with the Pegasus Knights to vanguard forward and likely get a first turn charge off. With only 6 drops it’s quite likely to get the +1 to go first. The Knights also have enough models to give you Lookout, Sir! for a bit. As a big old brick that character/knight combo is pretty unstoppable and can really pick and choose it’s fights. The characters are also strong enough to go off on their own and pick fights.
Outside of the characters and the Peg Knights there isn’t a whole ton of tricks to the list, but it all works. You’ve got a pair of Bombards to do some long range damage and force the enemy to close. These are also pretty great in mirror matches. You’ve got a unit of skirmishing Archers, because you have to. A small unit of Knights to be annoying and then one larger unit of Knights. I like the large unit because with Stubborn it’s pretty hard to get points off of them. They are also big enough to deal with weaker enemy units on their own. But this list really is about letting the Pegasus Knights and characters kill things and have the rest of it provide a bit of support.
The Characters In Detail
Given the importance of the characters in this list I figured we should take a deeper look at them. Now this particular character grouping/set up is one that I suggested to Blue when we workshopped this list a bit (not that he really needed by help!) and it clearly worked out for him! So if it seems similar to say my NOVA list, that’s part of the reason. The first character he has is a Baron:
Valiant Guardian Alistair de Vienne [294 pts]
– Hand weapon
– Lance
– Heavy armour
– The Exile’s Vow (replaces the Knight’s Vow)
– Royal Pegasus
– 2x Lucky Heirloom
– Ironspike Shield
– Virtue of Heroism
Now this is your pretty standard Baron with Virtue of Heroism. He’s meant to go off and try to monster slayer/killing blow big things and he’s good at that. The pair of Lucky Heirlooms are used mostly to re-roll wounds in hopes of getting that needed six to snicker-snack a big bad. Blue wanted to try something fancy here with the Ironspike Shield. It was his belief that when the hits it does to enemies that rolls 1s to hit or wound would get monster slayer/killing blow since the model has the rule not a weapon (similar to how slayers work). I understand however the TO’s ruled this did not work and allowed him to swap it for a 3rd lucky heirloom before the event started.
Lord Morien le Bruyant [262 pts]
– Hand weapon
– Heavy armour
– Shield
– The Exile’s Vow (replaces the Knight’s Vow)
– General
– Royal Pegasus
– Frontier Axe
– Virtue of Knightly Temper
Next up we have second Baron. This has actually become my favorite loadout for a Baron in Brets. It manages to keep him on the cheaper side of things by not using all his magic items points, but he remains one of the deadliest models in the game. He is is rocking 4+d3 attacks on the charge, with hatred, at S6 Ap -3 and 2 wounds- he can smash most enemies. Throw in another 5 attacks from the mount and it’s carnage.
Sir Tancred de Bastonne [155 pts]
– Hand weapon
– Heavy armour
– The Exile’s Vow (replaces the Knight’s Vow)
– Battle Standard Bearer [Banner Of Honourable Warfare]
– Barded Pegasus
– Falcon-horn of Fredemund
A Paladin BSB rounds out the Pegasus Mounted characters. This dude is really there for utility and not to fight much. The downgrade to a Barded Pegasus and lack of lace mean he’s just a few extra attacks if he gets into combat, but also means with skirmishers he’s easy to keep out of b2b/the fighting rank. The Falcon-Horn is one of the best items in the game. Meanwhile the Banner of Honourable Warfare is really meant to give the unit re-rolls to hit vs monsters with ranged weapons, which the FAQ counts breath weapons amongst. That helps the Virtue of Heroism Baron get in more hits. So his role is really anti-dragon. However I have heard that the LVO TO’s ruled that dragon breath weapons did not count for the banner, kind of killing this combo.
Lastly we have the Green Knight, who we should all know how he works. This guy is pretty annoying, with ethereal and decent attacks. Coming out of woods and steams he is also pretty fast and great for hunting rear-rank enemy characters or tying up things without magic attacks. He’s also pretty hard to score points off as he can keep coming back. He helps round out a stable of very fast and flexible characters that really pull this list through.
Congrats again to Blue for Best General and going undefeated! Let us know what you think of this list down in the comments!
Don’t Miss:
Abe is that rare thing, an Austin local born and raised here. Though he keeps on moving around, DC, Japan, ETC., he always seems to find his way back eventually. Abe has decades of experience with a wide range of tabletop and RPG games, from historicals, to Star Wars to D&D and 40K. He has been contributing to BOLS since almost the start, back when he worked at and then owned a local gaming store. He used to be big into the competitive Warhammer tournament scene but age has mellowed him and he now appreciates a good casual match. He currently covers 40K tactics and lore, as well as all things Star Wars, with occasional dabbling in other topics. Abe remains in mourning over the loss of WFB to this day.
