We would throw good money at LEGO for Ultimate Collectors Series versions of these Star Wars ships! Bring on the UCS sets!
Starting in 2000 the Ultimate Collectors Series (UCS) has put out some of the best Star Wars LEGO kits around. This sub-line of Star Wars LEGOs is aimed at making bigger more complex sets that are normally supposed to be displayed like collector pieces.
Since the original two sets, a TIE-Interceptor and an X-Wing, the line has grown both in the number of sets (41) and part count. For example, the newer versions of the Interceptor and X-Wing are much larger than the first series. The newer Interceptor set has 1912 pieces vs the 703 of the original. For the X-Wing set, it’s 1941 vs 1300. But these are still small counts compared to some of the larger UCS sets.

Each year we normally get two new UCS sets. Recently it’s been one in May and one in October, though this was not always true. This year we’ve already gotten Jango Fett’s Firespray-Class Starship. UCS sets regularly wind up on any best of lists for Star Wars LEGOs.
With all that said any new UCS set is cause for excitement. However there are a lot of ships in Star Wars, and not all of them have ever gotten UCS versions. So today let’s take a look at five ships that really need the LEGO Ultimate Collectors Series treatment.
1. The U-Wing

The U-Wing is an absolutely gorgeous starfighter. I love this thing to death. It’s also the only one of the main Rebellion-era Rebel fighters to have never gotten a UCS version. They’ve made X, Y, A, and B-wings, so it’s beyond time for the U-Wing.
This is extra true given that Andor is having its moment and that ship features in the show. We have gotten two normal LEGO U-Wings, one just this recently, but I’d love to see just how big a wingspan the UCS version would have!

2. TIE- Defender
The Defender is a big fan-favorite TIE that’s gotten very little love in LEGO. That is largely because it was of questionable cannon for a while. However, it was brought back into full cannon with Rebels and as such is fair game. The fighter did get a set back in 2010, but it’s a really unique looking TIE that deserves a nice UCS set!

3. Nebulon B-Frigate

Another classic ship that looks great and very very Star Wars-y is the Nebulon-B Frigate. This classic ship from the original trilogy has only ever got one small LEGO set and that was a 2020 Comic-con exclusive! A large part of that is because it’s such a wonky ship and doing it at a small scale can be hard. So I think it’s the perfect ship for a UCS treatment, go big or go home!

2. Home One
The UCS line has given us some really great really big builds. We’ve got some iconic and massive spaceships. However, almost all of the really big ones have been Star Destroyers. We’ve gotten a Venator set, Imperial, and even Super Star Destroyers, yet the only Rebel capital ship to show up was the Blockade Runner back in 2001.
We need some better Rebel love. And what better ship to do it with than an MC-80 class ship like Home One? Maybe an MC-75? Yeah, we got a cool Starship scale version of it this year, but overall the Rebel ships are very poorly represented in LEGO and I think this would make just a stunning display piece.

1. TIE Bomber
Yeah, I know it’s another TIE. But look, the TIE bomber is as far as I know the only starfighter from the OT to not have gotten a UCS set yet (sorry Cloud Car, I ain’t counting you as a starfighter). And that injustice needs to end.
In the Holy Trinity of mainline Imp fighters, the TIE, TIE Interceptor, and TIE Bomber. That last one is the missing piece. The vanished holy ghost if you will. And yeah, it’s gotten a couple of regular kits, but nowhere near the love it deserves. The lack of a UCS kit for it really leaves a hole in our collections that needs to be patched!

Abe is that rare thing, an Austin local born and raised here. Though he keeps on moving around, DC, Japan, ETC., he always seems to find his way back eventually. Abe has decades of experience with a wide range of tabletop and RPG games, from historicals, to Star Wars to D&D and 40K. He has been contributing to BOLS since almost the start, back when he worked at and then owned a local gaming store. He used to be big into the competitive Warhammer tournament scene but age has mellowed him and he now appreciates a good casual match. He currently covers 40K tactics and lore, as well as all things Star Wars, with occasional dabbling in other topics. Abe remains in mourning over the loss of WFB to this day.
