Games Workshop dropped a few hints at the new edition of the Horus Heresy. This is the tip of the rules iceberg!
The new edition of the Age of Darkness: The Horus Heresy is coming. While the core gameplay is going to still feature the Warhammer action you love, GW has made some interesting changes with the new edition. Here are a few things we could gather from the preview.
New Rules For The Horus Heresy
- Epic Challenges
- More flexible rules for army building
- Tactical Status – new weapon status effects
- Advanced Characteristics
While that’s not a ton to go off of, we did get some closer looks at some of the new Tactical Status effects.
That’s what these new tokens are for (and also objective markers).
Weapons are also getting a major rework. GW has adopted the Damage characteristic from their other systems to distinguish “wounds” now. Plus there’s more keywords and abilities. The same weapons you’re familiar with may have new weapon effects, too!
Above we get a look at the new Legionary stats. For the most part, it’s the same. However, there are new “Advanced Characteristics” that some veterans of Rogue Trader might recognize. Here’s a breakdown:
- LD – Leadership
- CL – Cool (how well they handle pressure/sniper fire/etc)
- WP – Will Power (psychic power/defense)
- IN – Intelligence (interaction for tech)
These Advanced Stats will use various checks that will often require 2D6 tests. And you want to roll under your stat to pass.
Weapon profiles also got a major update. Here’s the breakdown for those:
- R – Range
- FP – Fire Power – how many shots
- RS – Range Strength
- AP – Armor Pen
- D – Damage
For the Melee Weapons, those got some different stats, too:
- IM – Initiative Modifier
- AM – Attack Modifier – “A” uses your abilities
- SM – Strength Mod
- AP – Armor Pen
- D – Damage
Now, if you’re wondering where all the rules for your legion will be, fret not. There’s five new Liber books coming out at launch that will have you covered.
The Talons of the Emperor will get a free download at launch with a Liber book to follow later. Oh and finally, there’s a cool new galaxy map, too.
There’s going to be a TON more info on the WarCom site in the coming weeks that will cover a lot of the rules and updates for the Horus Heresy. So sit tight — the new edition will be here before you know it!
