The last son of Krypton was carried through the stars by a single, solitary rocket—one that ushered him towards destiny and a yellow sun.
Babies, even Kryptonian ones, are notoriously vulnerable and incapable of doing much of anything. So getting one safely across the stars, by itself, is an almost miraculous feat of engineering and science. And yet, that’s exactly what Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van managed to accomplish. Even though their world was dying, they managed to make a rocket that would take a lone infant across untold light years, to a lonely little ball of rock orbiting 93 million miles from a yellow sun.
Kryptonian Escape Rocket: Design and Capabilities
The Kryptonian Escape Rocket was designed by none other than Jor-El, the father of Kal-El. A noted Kryptonian scientist, Jor-El , believing that his homeworld was doomed, set about trying to preserve his people. And more to the point, his child. Not only his son, but the last son of Krypton. Jor-El and his wife, Lara Lor-Van started their plan with a typical Kryptonian birthing matrix.
A birthing matrix—for those who grew up on backwater planets where artificial intelliegence is used to make pictures of lewd cartoon characters instead of leaving that in the hands of living, breathing, horny artists—is a machine used to ensure healthy development of a child. Capable of sustaining them, a birthing matrix contained life support systems, some had artificial intelligences capable of educating their charges, with a vast repository of Kryptonian history and culture. Some could even carry messages from loved ones.
In the case of the one Kal-El was carried in, Jor-El outfitted it with a hyper light drive. Capable of traversing the vast interstellar void, the ship carried he infant Kal-El across the stars to the world of Earth.
A Yellow Sun For the Last Son
Of course, the story of how the rocket came to be varies from telling to telling. The thing most can agree on is that Jor-El was one of very few scientists who believed their homeworld was doomed. As a prominent member of the Kryptonian Science Council, Jor-El made the discovery that the planet’s core was unstable.
Believing the instability to be rising—owing to a cycle of repetitive cycle of “chain-impulses”, which applied an exponentially increasing pressure to the planet, Jor-El feared the planet would explode. And not just any explosion either, but the whole planet core would go nuclear. But nobody likes to hear bad news about their planet, and the other members of the science council ignored his warnings.
So it was that a prototype rocket with an infant escaped Krypton in its final hours. Leaving behind one world, to become one of the greatest heroes to another.
Thus it was that Krypton had a lasting legacy!
