The BackerKit campaign for the 2nd Edition of Monte Cook’s Cyper System blows past half a million dollars with 25 days to go.

Cypher, the RPG system behind award-winning tabletop RPGs like Numenera and The Strange, is cooking up a 2nd Edition, and folks are excited to the tune of raising more than half a million within the first five days of its crowdfunding campaign on BackerKit. With flexible characters and expansive settings, it has a lot to offer. And there are still 25 days to go. So let’s check it out!

Cypher 2nd Edition

This time around, “system” is getting dropped – at least from the title. The crowdfunding campaign centers around two books for Cypher – the Character Rulebook and GM’s Guide. These two books have everything you need to play across a variety of settings. And variety is doing some heavy lifting here.

One of the things that makes Cypher so appealing to its playerbase is its sheer flexibility. You can run a variety of genres and settings with it. To wit, you can do everything from being time-lost scientists stuck in a prehistoric era to being explorers of Earth one billion years into the future. It does everything from dungeon delves to space horror to swashbuckling.

And it’s easy enough to improvise for, once you get the hang of the system. Especially with some of the new rules in play for Cypher: 2nd Edition.

“Cypher is the popular, award-winning RPG system for the fun, fast-paced campaigns just itching to burst from your imagination and onto your game table. It’s fast, flexible, and incredibly easy on the GM. Players love their vivid, memorable characters that are easy to build, fun to play, and never bogged down in needlessly complex mechanics. GMs love running fun, fast-paced adventures and campaigns that bring their worlds to life without having to kludge the rules to make them fit.”

Practically speaking, what does that mean? Well, in 2nd Edition, there are a few big changes. Character generation/campaign generation is easier – there are pre-built guide rails for character archetypes, though if you like you can still kitbash a character from scratch if that’s what you prefer. While the core rules are integrating lessons learned and player feedback – so now, for instance, damage is getting separated from pools, and armor is getting less confusing.

All of which you can see for yourself in the free preview of the rules available here. If you’ve never taken the Cypher System for a spin – now might be the time to check it out and see if you want to jump in on the BackerKit. With a growing list of stretch goals and some sweet acker deals you can pick up extra accessories like Divination Decks or Cypher cards so you can jump right in.
