WotC just released an updated Arcane Subclasses Unearthed Arcana, revisiting the Tattooed Warrior, Arcane Archer, and Wizardry schools.
Magic is one of the biggest elements in Dungeons & Dragons. Which stands to reason – this is a game of fantasy adventure. And every single class has at least a little bit of magic to it, even if only in one of the subclasses. Fighters have their Eldritch Knights (and soon Arcane Archers), Monks have their Way of Four Elements, and soon Tattooed Warrior. Even Rogues and Barbarians get in on the action, which is why the Arcane Subclasses Unearthed Arcana was so broad when it first came out a few months ago.
Now it’s back, with updated tweaks made based on your feedback. Tattooed Monk fans can rejoice. But many of the other subclasses have gotten a little attention: the Arcane Archer, Tattooed Monk, and the schools of Conjuration, Enchantment, Necromancy, and Transmutation all get updates in the new Unearthed Arcana.
Arcane Subclasses Update – A New Unearthed Arcana
Six revised subclasses await within. And honestly, a few of them were sorely needed. The Tattooed Monk, especially, needed some love. If you missed it the first time around, it was reminiscent of the old Four Elements Monk, which was one of the worst subclasses in D&D. Now, however, it seems like the whole subclass has been revisited.
And the Arcane Archer gets a tasty treat in the form of updated features beyond just “your special die gets a little bigger.” Which is something that I’m excited to see – the feedback from players is being very visibly incorporated. That’s a huge relief for players who were perhaps a little underwhelmed by the previous version. But also it signifies that WotC is listening. And making changes.
We’ll take you through the full six revised subclasses in more detail. But for now, just know that these aren’t just minor tweaks in a lot of cases. The Conjurer Wizard, you know, the one that should be all about summoning, but which was actually all about teleportation, has been revisited in a big way, as the design team reveals on D&D Beyond:
“The Feedback has shown an increase in interest for summoning, and we were more than happy to provide. In this update, we condensed the movement features together and added new features focused on summoning spells. The updated Conjurer focuses on making their summoned creatures much more durable than previous iterations.”
And that’s what the people want. Like, yeah, sure, conjuration spells “transport creatures and items” and the teleport spells are technically part of the conjuration school. But you hear conjurer, you think “summons.” Nintendo patent notwithstanding.
You can find the full, updated playtest packet below. And be sure and keep an eye out for a new survey! As you’ll see, you really can help change the shape of the game.
Summoning spells for conjurers, who would’ve thunk it!
