Traveling in D&D can be a complicated affair. But these five magic items make it much easier to get from place to place.

They often say it’s not the destination, it’s the journey. But what they don’t tell you is that journeys can be hard. And they can be winding, taking you across the world as your little collection of weirdos goes from a pastoral little village to the depths of the multiverse in the span of a couple of months (in-game). But getting there is often tricky. Long journeys are full of considerations—how much do you take with you? How do you stay fed? Fortunately these magic items make your journey easier.

Alchemy Jug

The humble Alchemy Jug is one of the best items to have with you on a long journey. Because one of the main things you have to worry about is having enough to drink. And the Alchemy Jug provides plenty of that. For one, you can have it pour out eight gallons of fresh drinkable water. That’s enough for up to eight medium creatures to meet their minimum daily needs.

But, that’s not all. Because you can also get a wide variety of liquids. What if you forgot seasoning? You can pour out up to a gallon of honey. Or two gallons of mayonnaise. If need be you can also get oil and vinegar, whip up a nice salad dressing (after two days). But also, if you have enough water, and alchemy jug can produce four gallons of beer. And that makes any long journey that much easier.

Folding Boat

The Folding Boat is a classic D&D item. It feels almost mythological—a small wooden box that can unfold into a whole boat. Two different boats, in fact.

In its resting form, the Folding Boat is a smallish wooden box. It can open up into either a rowboat, small enough for just a single party of four; or it can become a mighty keelboat, capable of hauling up to 7, comfortably, and a half-ton of cargo. Either option is a great boon on any journey.

Bead of Nourishment/Refreshment

A Bead of Nourishment or Refreshment, as the name suggests, is a little bead that, when taken, provides enough either food or water for the day. And these are Common Magic Items, meaning you can find them in regular or specialty NPC shops.

And while you can certainly also still pick up rations or waterskins full to the brim, you can carry even more when it’s in bead form. Which ostensibly means more room to carry gold and other loot back from whatever adventure you happen to be on.

Daern’s Instant Fortress

We have food and water covered. But what about shelter? That’s where Daern’s Instant Fortress comes in. This is a single cube that can be instantly expanded into a whole actual tower, complete with battlements and everything. All it takes is a single command word.

And it’s not a small tower, either. It’s big enough to house multiple adventuring parties. You and your hirelings can all take shelter within. And when you’re done? It collapses back down into cube form for ready transport.

Orb of Direction

You know, sometimes it *is* actually about the destination, though. Sometimes you just have to get somewhere. When you’re in those situations, the Orb of Direction is one of your new best friends.

Because surprise, it’s just a magical compass. While holding it, you automatically know which direction is magnetic north. So then all you need is a map or at least a good sense of where you are, and you can find your way to your destination.
