The Runelord Saga comes to an “epic conclusion” in Pathfinder’s newest adventure path: Revenge of the Runelords, starting next week!
Cast your mind back to the halcyon days of 2007. The first iPhone had just been revealed in a presentation that would change the way people reveal new tech forever. A looming recession was still only being screamed about by people nobody listens to, like economic advisors who kept saying inane things like “subprime mortgages are predatory and bad.” And Paizo released the first-ever Pathfinder Adventure Path, Rise of the Runelords. Interestingly enough, the Runelords saga was the first-ever Pathfinder product, predating even the core rulebooks.
This is because in 2007, WotC decided not to renew Paizo’s license for both Dragon and Dungeon magazines. And then later that same year, they announced the impending 4th Edition. Rise of the Runelords came out before the first official Pathfinder core book, as part of the Pathfinder Adventure Path periodicals. And of course, the rest is history. Until now, when Paizo looks to conclude the Runelord saga with Revenge of the Runelords, a 3-part Adventure Path, coming very soon.
Revenge of the Runelords – A Mythic Adventure
Revenge of the Runelords is the epic conclusion to that saga begun 18 years ago. At least that’s what Paizo says this time. I don’t know if we’ll ever truly be done with the Runelords, but the new adventure path does look pretty cool.
It all kicks off with a classic celestial omen of ill-portent. A three-tailed star falls from the skies and then everything starts to go awry. And the PCs get involved not long after, needing to do both politics and adventuring to try and help avert disaster.
Beginning with Lord of the Trinity Star, an adventure for mythic characters at 12th level:
During the Godsrain, a strange falling star with three tails was seen in the skies over the Saga Lands, yet no attempt to find its landing site has been successful. What fell to the world that night has now emerged, and as heroes work with the ruler of New Thassilon to help bring the nation to the global political stage, disaster strikes as a foe thought long dead rises and returns for revenge!
Lord of the Trinity Star is a Pathfinder adventure for four mythic 12th-level characters. This adventure begins the Revenge of the Runelords Adventure Path, a three-part monthly campaign in which a group of mythic adventurers face the Runelords—some of the most powerful and legendary foes in Pathfinder’s history, concluding an epic story nearly 2 decades in the telling. This adventure also includes information about Nocticula (goddess of art, midnight, and exiles), new and powerful magic items to claim, and several new monsters to threaten mythic heroes!”

If you aren’t familiar with mythic heroes, these are like regular Pathfinder heroes, but they have even more abilities. And over the course of the Revenge of the Runelords, you’ll really get to dig in and play with high-powered features. I think Paizo has always had a good handle on high-stakes, epic type adventures.
And this is the end of a decades-spanning saga. One that even continued through the Return of the Runelords. If you want to see what high-level Pathfinder can be like, Revenge of the Runelords is one of the best shots in recent times!
Rise, Return, Revenge – the Runelords needs to decide whether they’re Jedi or Sith!
