Stranger Things‘ final season is almost upon us. But before it premieres, bask in the warm glow of the 80s in the new D&D Stranger Things set.

Stranger Things helped bring D&D back into the public eye. It reveled in the glory of a good D&D group in Season 4, with the introduction of Dungeon Master and true hero, Eddie Munson. Now, you and your friends can join the Hellfire Club, picking up where Eddie left off. Discovering the lost notebooks of Eddie Munson, you and your friends can bring an end to the Hellfire Club’s last great campaign.

All thanks to a new boxed set, the Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club Ultimate Bundle, available now on D&D Beyond.

Now look, these tie-in things can go either way. The last Stranger Things and D&D crossover was fun, but it had some flaws when it came to taking care of the dungeon master. Basically, unless you were really experienced, the encounters could be so swingy that parties might get wiped out – a difficult thing to manage in 5E.

So the fact that this boxed set is all about the Dungeon master has me feeling hopeful. Because it’s not just that you’re playing with 80s vibes, you’re continuing the final campaign of DM Eddie Munson, which is a cool premise, for sure. But it’s also a good reason to take care of the DM as they guide the characters through the 4 adventures.

You’ll need that, because at its heart, this is secretly another Stranger Things-flavored starter set.

“The Hellfire Club started as a haven for outsiders, free spirits, and dice-slingers. But founder Eddie Munson’s final campaign was left unfinished…until now.

By the power of Hellfire! together with your crew, take on challenges hotter than Hellfire – from gnarly battles with Demogorgons and Demodogs to eerie dockside murders and the treacherous Vale of Shadows. […] With tips and tricks from the legend Eddie Munson himself, this is a place where everyone is welcome.”

As you might expect from a Starter Set, this is a box with 4 adventures that takes you from character levels 1-3, as well as a quick-start guide. You’ll find some new D&D secrets hiding within, including 14 new monsters and eight new magic items. As well as premade characters taken straight from the show.

It’s a little funny to me that the premise is “you’re finishing the final campaign,” and it’s just “you play adventures to level 3.” I think there’s a real missed opportunity there for some higher-level adventures. But I get it. The intersection of people into Stranger Things enough to buy a D&D set AND also to play high-level D&D is a small slice of the total audience. At any rate, the adventures look fun, and if you want some retro art and vintage vibes, this Starter Set is as good a time as any.

See you in Greyhawkins!
