In the upcoming Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun, DMs will have tools and tables to help them run adventures across the Realms.
There are two new books, coming quite soon, for the Forgotten Realms. For players, there’s the Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun, and for DMs, Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun. And it’s the latter we’re taking a look at today.
Inside is a suite of tools to help DMs sink their teeth into the Forgotten Realms and run adventures therein. What kinds of tools? Well for starters, oracle tables. Oracle tables, if you aren’t aware are the tables you roll on to see what’s happening whenever you aren’t sure what comes next. It’s a way to procedurally generate the world, if you like.
And in a preview on D&D Beyond, we get a glimpse of what those tools entail for the DM. Let’s take a look.
Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun DM Tools Preview
In a preview on D&D Beyond we get a glimpse of what lies in store for each of the various parts of the Forgotten Realms—not just the sword coast! The new book is full of lore, monsters, and ready-to-run adventures. But of special interest is whatever is in the DM’s toolbox, which has unique mechanics for each region and more.
Now, I hasten to point out, we don’t get to see what those unique mechanics are just yet. Though hopefully we’ll get an idea soon. But we do get to see an example of what kinds of lore and adventures you can expect in the various regions of the Realms, starting with none other than Baldur’s Gate, because duh.
In Baldur’s Gate you’ll get a guide to the different factions, including the Council of Four, the Flaming Fist, the Cults of the Dead Three and so forth. You’ll also find a table with adventure seeds in the form of random encounters. The ones on display are focused around fiends and the Dead Three. Bane Cultists, Myrkulan Cultists and Bhaalites abound.
But in a neat turn of events, it isn’t just Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale and other well-traveled parts of the Realms. In the D&D Beyond preview, we also get a look at Claimshan and the Moonshae Isles. Baby steps beyond the Sword Coast, but steps nonetheless.
I hope in the coming days to get more of an idea of how DMs can expect the book to impact their prep and adventures. But in the meantime, this teaser is enough to make you want to go dig through the Forgotten Realms wiki.
The Forgotten Realms campaign setting books release November 11th out into the wide world. So keep an eye out for your invitation to Faerun.
I’m sure the Sword Coast is still featured, though, don’t worry.!
