The Star Wars: Legion Starter sets are all out now. But it seems like folks REALLY like the Clone Wars era.

I was not expecting to see this when I was researching this one. The Galactic Republic and Separatists Alliance Starter Sets were officially released on the 17th. Today, I wanted to check in on them and remind folks they were out in the wild. But, apparently, folks didn’t need a reminder. These sets are sold out already from Asmodee!

Now, I did Pricing Breakdowns for both the Separatists and the Republic. Both of those were REALLY good deals. However, what wasn’t expecting was the fan reaction to both of these sets. If you go to their respective Asmodee page, you can see the ratings for both:

Notice the Galactic Republic Starter set has 130 “hearts” and the Separatist Alliance has 44 “hearts” — that might not seem like a ton. But compare that with the Empire and Rebels:

Not only are the Clone Wars-Era sets more popular, the Rebellion era sets are also still available. Now, I don’t know if AMG/Asmodee produced more of those sets or what. But it’s clear there’s favorites from the fans here.

Clone Wars > Rebellion Era?

Now, I don’t really have a dog in this fight. But looking at the reactions to the Clone Wars-Era starters it’s pretty easy to see that fans really like the Clones of the Galactic Republic. Could that be due to the fact that that particular era has gotten a lot of attention over the years? How many of the animated shows were set in that era? Also how many fan favorites are from that era as well?

So does that mean the Clone Wars is just a better era overall? I don’t know for sure and that seems like a pretty far leap. However, I think that there are a few other things that are tilting things towards the Clone Wars-era’s favor.

The Galactic Republic army is potent. Those Clones don’t mess around and are one of the more elite armies. They have a lot of cool units and look like a real army. It’s not a bunch of rag-tag rebels and it’s not a bunch of Storm Troopers that (jokingly) can’t hit things. I also think the Clone Wars-Era is just a better setting for this type of tabletop conflict. The name is the Clone WARS after all. It’s one thing to have a guerrilla force vs a standing army. It’s another to have two armies (Clones vs Droids) duke it out on the tabletop.

I’m sure there’s other factors — like the different shows and the ages of the folks that watched them when they aired vs now. But I’m curious as to what is actually causing this discrepancy. Clearly folks really like the Galactic Republic Starter the most with 130 “hearts” at the time of writing this. That’s more that 4 times the Empire and more that 6 times the popularity of the Rebel starter. I don’t think price is a factor either because all of these are great deals. So what gives?!

Do you think the Clone Wars-Era is just a better fit for Star Wars: Legion?
