Atomic Mass Games is taking a deeper look at the Spider-Foes Starter Pack. This set is perfect for starting your villain arc.

I’m pretty impressed with the Spider-Foes Starter Set already. I did a pricing breakdown showing how good of a deal this one turned out to be. It also inspired me to get my set ready for action on the tabletop.

I still need that Rhino though…

And now Atomic Mass Games has written up a look at the characters in the pack and how you can use them in your games. What’s great about that particular article is that it’s got all of the updated character cards. That’s going to be useful for veterans as well as new players.

Now, I’m not going to cover all the character cards or even go into each individual character with this article. Instead, I wanted to focus on the how you can grow it using AMG’s own article as the core.

Spider-Foes Affiliation Example

Let’s start with some assumptions. The first one is that we’re starting with the new Spider-Foes Starter as our first dip into the Affiliation. We’ll assume that you also have the new(er) Earth’s Mightiest Core Set, too. Or at least have access to one. We’ll get to the why for that later. Now, let’s get started.

AMG has an example 17 threat team built from the starter set. So we’ll take a look at that first:

  • Green Goblin (4) – Leader
  • Lizard (3)
  • Shocker (3)
  • Rhino (4)
  • Carnage (4)

Now, I’m not going to get into all the ins-and-outs for this setup. But it’s is solid for many missions. It’s does pack some heavy hits mixed in with speed for objective playing. I could see this one being a great team setup to learn the Spider-Foes Affiliation with. Plus, Green Goblin is your default leader for this box because he’s the only one with a Leadership ability in this set. So get used to running him for a bit.

Additionally, AMG also has a few recommended Team Tactic Cards to include:

  • Surprise, Webhead
  • Sinister Traps
  • Strategic Retreat
  • Brace For Impact
  • Joint Effort

According to them:

Sinister Traps and Surprise Webhead are two that most Spider-Foes players would want to bring, giving the affiliation access to easy enemy damage on turn one and a big turn where each Spider-Foes character can make an attack without needing to use an action, or even be on their own activation!”

A 17 threat team is nice because you can pretty easily swap out a character or two to jump up to 18 or more threat. Swapping out Shocker for Electro is an example of how easy it is to do just that. But that’s just the start of the Spider-Foes Affiliation.

Expanding the Spider-Foes

The first addition is a pretty easy one. I did say that we’re assuming there’s access to the Earth’s Mightiest Core Set. That set has Doc Ock, Sinister Scientist.

He’s a pretty easy 1-to-1 swap for Green Goblin if you want to experiment with a different leadership ability. The bonus energy and the “free” condition removal is surprisingly handy. I think this one is a great way to change things up. For players new to the Affiliation, it’s kind of nice to have an easy swap to try a different leader. It can really change up your game plans.

Building from this point there are only a couple more characters that are still in the Spider-Foes:

  • Doctor Octopus
  • Kingpin
  • Prowler
  • Venom

Now, most of these are available in other character packs at this point but you might be able to find one-offs in the wild still. By picking up the Criminal Syndicate Affiliation Pack you’ve got a BUNCH of cross-over potential there.

Not only do you get Kingpin for Spider-Foes, you’ll also open up your Rosters for the Criminal Syndicate Affiliation in a big way. Kraven, Mysterio, Rhino, Sandman, Shocker, and Vulture are ALSO part of the the Criminal Syndicate Affiliation. Kingpig is a Leader in that faction so you’re all set there now.

Venom and Prowler are both part of other Spider-Man related character packs now, too. And Doc Ock (1) is from the original Core Set which is probably the best place for you to get that version of him if you’re going with the Spider-Foes Starter Pack to get into the game. The other option is the Spider Foes Affiliation Pack, but you’d be doubling up on three other characters so…yeah.

Start Your Villain Arc

To circle back to the top, I do think the Spider-Foes Starter Pack is a great way to jump into Marvel: Crisis Protocol. There’s a wide array of options to start with, it’s pretty easy to expand, and there’s bleed over into other Affiliations. To me, if you’re looking to get some villains on the tabletop, this is one of the best ways to do it fairly quick and easy.

Again, if you’re interested in more rules or want to see the character cards to formulate your own villainous plots, then I highly recommend reading the full breakdown from AMG. But if you just want to dive in, the Starter Set is currently up for pre-order. The current release date is slated for December 5, 2025.
