WotC’s ill-fated 3D virtual tabletop “Project Sigil” comes to an official close next year, per an announcement on D&D Beyond.

WotC is officially sunsetting Project Sigil. This news comes as no surprise, considering that earlier this year the company announced it was halting all active development on the platform and laid off something like 90% of the development team. But, per a recent announcement on D&D Beyond, we now now what the timeline for the shutdown looks like, as well as what steps WotC is taking in the future.

WotC Sunsets Project Sigil – October 2026

Project Sigil was WotC’s first foray into trying to corner the digital tabletop market. Its origins are intrinsically linked to the OGL saga; if you recall there was a lot of language around animation and digital displays. As well as potential sweetheart deals for people who signed early. While this never came to pass, it certainly hurt the sentiment for Project Sigil before it even really began.

Couple that with a rocky development and a changing guard at WotC and we come to today, when the WotC team officially announced the end of Project Sigil:

“We have made the difficult decision to end development on Sigil. This was not a decision made lightly, and it followed months of reflection with all teams involved. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who explored Sigil with us and shared in its journey. Your passion and feedback meant the world.

At Wizards of the Coast, our goal is to create experiences that help you tell incredible stories together, whether at the table, online, or anywhere you gather to play.

When we introduced Sigil, we imagined a powerful 3D virtual tabletop where you could share maps, minis, and environments with your friends and fellow players. While that vision inspired thousands of players and creators, we couldn’t sustain the level of ongoing development support that Sigil—or our community—deserved. That’s on us. What we’ve learned from Sigil, and from your feedback, will guide how we approach future digital tools. We’ll take the time to do it right in pursuit of developing the best D&D experiences possible.”

By way of an apology to those who supported and played with Sigil using a Master Tier subscription on D&D Beyond, WotC will be issuing a six-month credit. If you used a paid or trial Master Tier D&D Beyond subscription to access Sigil at least once between March 1, 2025 and 11:59pm PT on October 23rd (yesterday for those playing along at home), then you will be getting a six-month Master Tier credit granted to your account on November 7th.

But if you have an active subscription, it’ll be paused for the duration and will resume afterward. Have more questions? You can find answers at the Project Sigil Sunset FAQ.
