The amazing Young Adventurer’s Guide series adds a new title, all about diving into what it really means to create a character with Warriors and Wizards.
One of my personal favorite D&D accessories is the Young Adventurer’s Guide series. These are books aimed at younger readers, helping to immerse them, not just in the game, but in the world of D&D. We’ve discussed them before – and, in fact, have spoken with one of the authors of the series, Jim Zub – and they make great gifts for young gamers especially if you have someone in the 8-12 range who’s curious about D&D and wants to get into it more.
What I love about each of these books is how characterful they are. They don’t just present the information in stat blocks and rules. In fact, these are all flavor. But its flavor is designed to spark the imagination and get young adventurers thinking about the worlds they’re playing in. The newest title in the series, The Warriors & Wizards Compendium takes aim at one of the most intricate parts of D&D: character creation.
Warriors & Wizards – A Young Adventurer’s Guide To Playing A Hero
These books are an excellent roleplay aid. There’s no denying that they are aimed at kids. But I would point out that they make great books to have on hand if you’re running for kids too. These are a great resource for a school’s D&D club, for instance. Because they help get readers into the “lonely fun” of it all, which is just how a lot of the TTRPG talks about the enjoyment of reading the book and thinking about your characters in the world.
It’s fun you have when you’re not playing the game. Fun you have on your own. And because these are aimed at younger readers, they’re also a great way to get kids reading more. After all, they’re helping you with something you ostensibly like: D&D.
If you’ve never read one of these, and have younger gamers in your life, I highly recommend them. They present the facts of D&D but from the perspective of someone in the world. In older books, for instance, you learn what kinds of monsters you might be facing in the dungeon. And maybe you have some helpful advice from seasoned adventurers.
In Warriors & Wizards, you’ll find inspiration for your charatcer. Whether that’s picking your class and background, or figuring out what kind of weapons, spells, and other gear they might use. And as you can see from some of the way the book is laid out, they present you with how a piece of D&D works and why you might want to use it. I think this is especially good for Wizards and other spellcasters – there’s some great advice about when you might want to use Polymorph, for instance.
With the holidays around the corner, these are the perfect gift for any who want to be involved in a young adventurer’s life. If you haven’t seen any of these, you can check out The Warriors & Wizards Compendium at the link below, or scroll on to learn more about the series.
More Young Adventurer’s Guides
There’s a Young Adventurer’s Guide for just about every situation in D&D. Case in point, there’s a book for Eberron and the Artificer, Artificers & Alchemy. Or you can find something about the multiverse of D&D and its myriad planes of existence in both Places & Portals and Worlds & Realms.
If you want to dig deep into the lore of D&D, if you want to give the young gamers in your life something fun to read that is somewhere between the complexity of a chapter book but also has a little bit more of a “and now you use this knowledge” to it (assuming they’re playing D&D), then I definitely recommend checking out any or all of these. If I was going to start somewhere, it’d be with one of the more “player character” focused things, and then build out the collection from there.
