Games Workshop is continuing on to Day 3 of the Grotmas Calendar. Today we’ve got Horus Heresy Loyalist Legion painting guides!
I suppose these are a nice gift for Horus Heresy fans, but really, I think this are applicable to all Space Marine Players. Especially if you’re rocking one of the First Founding Chapters. These are the colors used by the GW studio to paint up the Loyalist Legions for the Horus Heresy.
“Today’s gift is a Legions painting guide for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy, designed to help get your Loyalist Space Marines looking their best so that they’ll be ready to take on the craven forces of the Warmaster Horus. Maybe Da Red Gobbo has a favourite side after all? Get your brushes at the ready….”
Loyalist Legion Painting Guide
Now, you can go check out the WarCom article for all nine paint schemes. Below, I’m including just a couple as references to talk about these guides.
What I really like about these color palette breakdowns is that GW has both a simplified and full color break down for each relative part. Not only do these cover the armor but they also breakdown the undersuit as well as all the relative details. Note the “O” next to the paint color to denote that it’s part of the simplified scheme.
Another fun thing to see is that they don’t shy away from some of the more outlandish colors. Yellow can be a notoriously hard color to paint. But the guide for the Imperial Fists really does breakdown the color choice and should help guide anyone looking to get that nice bright yellow look. The only thing I do wish they would have included is the primer colors they used per legion. I’m guessing GW probably went with Corax White for the brighter colors and Chaos Black for the darker ones. But I’d love to know for sure.
I did want to call out that some of the painting schemes are a bit more technical that others. For example, the Salamanders has a “chunky highlight” blend included. The plus side is that GW does include the ratio of paint to use. However, I think the application is really where the skill comes in. That said, GW does have plenty of step-by-step painting guides on their Warhammer YouTube channel. Plus there’s also TONS of painting guides for just about every chapter out there. So if you’re really struggling with the technique, I’d suggest checking out those channels for more guidance.
Anyhow, there’s plenty more days of the Grotmas Calendar on the way. What are the odds we get a Traitor Legion Painting guide…
So many paint colors…
