Magpie Games has been absolutely crushing it. You might recognize them as the makers of Avatar Legends, the Avatar the Last Airbender roleplaying game. Or you might know them from the teen superhero RPG Masks: A New Generation, which lets you live out the Teen Titans adventure of your dreams. Perhaps you’ve played their tabletop RPG adaptation of Root, the popular board game of fantasy woodland creatures enmeshed in war, revolution, and vagabondery.
Either way, they make great stuff. And now’s your chance to save big on anything they make, with 20% off site-wide through Friday morning. This flash holiday sale doesn’t last long, but if you act quickly, you’ll have your books in time for the holidays.
It’s a great option if you’re shopping for a gamer in your life too. Avatar Legends, in particular, has won awards for its flexible PBTA rules that let you play everything from a bender of any element to someone who just happens to be pretty good at sword without running into the Gaang’s Sokka problem.
Though, my personal favorite is Root. It hits the gritty fantasy vibes extremely well, because it’s very true to its source material. You’re playing cute woodland creatures, but you’re getting wrapped up in big events with big consequences. If you want a taste of this, I highly recommend the Root RPG Bertram’s Cove Quickstart Set. Bertram’s Hollow captures the whole messy, complicated feel of Root’s world, and lets you play with the idea that war turns out to be not great for anybody but those at the top, firsthand.
Or if you want some more darkness in your world, check out Urban Shadows. This is a roleplaying game of supernatural factions that inhabit a city. You might become embroiled in supernatural politics as you vie for control over the resources of the city you happen to live in. It’s urban fantasy at its finest.
There’s a lot to dig into in Magpie’s oeuvre. But you can save on just about anything right now – but you’ll have to hurry, the sale ends Friday.
Seriously though, Bertram’s Cove is a great short campaign, even if you don’t play Root, it’s worth checking out!
