Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy the cRPG is getting an Alpha release on Steam next week. And Owlcat Games shows off its grim dark gorgeousness.
Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy joins Rogue Trader in the ranks of 40K video game RPGs. Designed by Owlcat Studios, who return once more to the world of the grim darkness of the distant future, Dark Heresy is based on the tabletop RPG of the same name. And just as in the RPG, in the upcoming game, you’ll play as an acolyte of the Inquisition, tasked with rooting out heresy, corruption, and a diverse array of threats that will probably turn you into a fine red pulp. But hey, that’s what life in the Imperium is all about.
Owlcat Studios announced a Dark Heresy alpha launch, coming next week on Steam. So starting December 16th, you can dip your toes into the heretical pool. But before then, they’re showing off screenshots from the latest build. It’s already looking good.
Dark Heresy Alpha – Coming December 16th
We know a little bit about Dark Heresy – namely that you’ll have a wide range of companions. We’ve seen an Ogryn, a Catachan Veteran, and a Kroot mercenary. But as you might imagine with any of these Owlcat games, the cast of characters gets even wilder than that.
As do your choices and their consequences. You’ll have to decide how closely you hew to Imperial principles as they butt up against the grim realities of trying to keep the people of the Imperium safe. To that end, you might decide to be a pragmatist or to go all out in your faith in the Emperor. Whatever choices you make will have consequences.
But this game adds even more in the form of investigations you, the Inquisition acolyte, will have to carry out. All while the Tyrant Star burns its shadowy darkness against the void of space.
“In Warhammer 40K: Dark Heresy, the second narrative-driven tactical RPG set in the beloved grimdark universe, players step into the darkness as an acolyte of the Inquisition. In a sector of the Imperium overshadowed by the Noctis Aeterna and the mystery of the Tyrant Star, they will lead a warband of diverse companions in a desperate battle against heresy and corruption, from loyal Imperial subjects, such as a veteran Guardsman from the Death World of Catachan, to nefarious Xenos, including a bird-like Kroot mercenary.”
Now, as with any Alpha release, the game is sure to change a lot. This one is for the folks who really can’t wait to get their hands on the game. But hey – Baldur’s Gate 3 changed so much between its early access phase and release, that it was practically a new game.
If you want in. If you want to help provide feedback, this is your chance. Alpha access is part of certain pre-orders, more information on that is available on the game’s Steam page, linked below.
Dark Heresy returns, what a year it is going to be!
