Modiphius’ Space: 1999 The Roleplaying Game launches on DriveThruRPG today. A sci-fi classic wrapped up in a new RPG.

The official Space: 1999 RPG from Modiphius launched today on DriveThruRPG, giving a whole new wave of players a chance to explore (and fall in love with) the world of Moonbase Alpha. Created in partnership between Modiphius and Anderson Entertainment, the new RPG takes place in the world of Space: 1999, a 1975 British television sci-fi series celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

This marks another beloved sci-fi franchise under Modiphius’ belt. They’ve also got Fallout, Dune, and Star Trek, so you know, there’s something of a pedigree there. And the new RPG fits right in with the “sci-fi classics” aesthetic they seem to have going for ’em.

Space: 1999 The RPG – Out Now On DriveThruRPG

As you might imagine from Modiphius, the new RPG uses the 2d20 engine. If you’ve played the Star Trek or Fallout RPGs, you probably already know how it plays. But if not, it’s a flexible RPG engine that allows for custom rules to get at the heart of whatever narrative/genre is being served up. If you’ve ever played FATE or the like, you might be familiar with the system of narrative “tags” that help define the scenes you play in.

And for Space: 1999 The RPG the same principle is in full effect. The rulebook goes into extensive detail about the world of Space: 1999. It even goes as far as giving you the option to play as one of the main characters of the show.

“A cataclysmic accident has sent Earth’s moon hurtling into space, leaving behind a broken planet. Life has become a fight for survival for the people of Moonbase Alpha as their journey takes them far deeper into the universe than they ever thought possible!

Take part in a journey full of danger, wonder, and mystery as one of the dedicated crew of Moonbase Alpha on their search for a new home.”

Within the 300-page rulebook, you’ll find a surprisingly detailed write-up of the setting, complete with aliens and recognizable NPCs, as well as tools for running the kinds of adventures that would feel right at home on serialized ’70s sci-fi TV, which is a harder niche to fill than you might think.
