SEGA and Creative Assembly are taking the Total War franchise to the Grimdark sci-fi setting of Warhammer: 40,000! This is going to be wild.

In case you didn’t watch the Game Awards or missed the announcement there’s some big 40k news. You saw the headline so let’s just roll that trailer:

Total War: Warhammer 40,000 Announced

via Warhammer Community

“Fans of Total War: Warhammer will already know what to look forward to: strategic depth, brutal battles, and cinematic warfare. Now in the 41st Millennium, you’ll be waging war on a galactic scale. You’ll be able to conquer planets, upgrade your fleet, and manage your resources, before unleashing your forces in apocalyptic battle.”

At launch we’re going to have four factions to play:

  • Space Marines
  • Astra Militarum
  • Orks
  • Aeldari

Obviously each of these armies will have their own unique playstyles with different strengths and weaknesses. There’s a ton of units pulled right from the tabletop that will be injected into this game, too. You probably caught those in the trailer.

As far as the armies go you’ll also be able to customize their colors. This should be a real treat for fans to get to tweak their paint schemes across these factions. It almost wouldn’t feel right without it!

What I’m personally most curious about is how exactly this one is going to work. The trailer had the Marines and the Militarum forces battling the Orks. So I’m guessing allies will be a thing. It also would make sense for the battles in this game to continue to be the real-time strategy style fights — that was evident from the gameplay footage we saw. But then towards the end we saw a zoom out to orbit with a Space Marine Strike Cruiser with an “End Turn” button. This reminds me of the turn based campaign structure from the other Total War games.

I’m curious to see how far the campaign battles system will go and how managing fleets and resources will play out. Considering we’re also getting Dawn of War IV and it’s return to more of a classic RTS style, it seems like we’re going to be eating good on that front! Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is slate for a PC release as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. This is going to be very interesting…

Total War takes on Warhammer 40,000?! This could be REAL good.
