The X-Men Starter Set for Marvel: Crisis Protocol is in the house! Let’s take a closer look at the new way to jump into the game.
I’ve been pretty excited about getting ahold of this set since it was announced. That’s why when Atomic Mass Games decided to send this one out for a review copy I was thrilled to get to to be the one to cover it. While these models aren’t new the repackaging certainly is redone. This is a true starter set so let’s dive in!
It’s worth noting that this whole set is English only. I’m not sure what the plan is for multi-language support for other regions.
X-Men Starter Set Unboxed
Kicking things off, we have a LOT of stuff going on. Normally, I’d just leave the picture here to really speak for itself but I think this one deserves a closer look at the contents. This is a new product from AMG so of course everything comes in baggies. There’s actually ADDITIONAL baggies for your tokens and other things that might need to be kept separate as well.
Speaking of tokens, you can see you get a FULL set including the correct sized objective markers and plenty of damage/energy tokens. It even comes with a turn tracker as well as 10 dice to play all your games with. All the status effects as well as custom tokens for the characters including are also a part of this token punchout set.
There’s also the range and movement tools as well as missions for play. It’s worth noting that the missions themselves are a mix of ones you might find in the Earth’s Mightest Core Set and the War of Kings box with Gladiator. I’m glad to see AMG include these as part of the starter just because this really is everything you need to actually jump in and play MCP. It’s a full roster of characters and accessories.
Oh and let’s not forget the Team Tactic Cards. There’s 19 cards in total so there’s plenty of options to choose from. Also, because of the Characters included you’ve got four different leaders you can use. There’s two for the X-Men and two for the Brotherhood of Mutants. So you’ve got a fairly versatile set of characters and Team Tactics to work with.
Here are the character cards. As far as I can tell, these are all the brand new versions of these characters. Again, this play set only came in English. If you’re a veteran player and were looking for the updated cards without having to print your own, this box has you covered.
As far as the sprues and bases go, again, these aren’t new miniatures. Nothings has really changed in that department. I will say you do end up with more bases than you’ll need but that’s not a bad thing. The miniatures themselves still hold up in my book. These are some of my favorites — but that’s mostly because I’m an X-Men fan so I’m biased. I’ve played quite a few rounds with the X-Men and they are still one of my go-to teams.
I also want to point out that you really can’t beat the price for a starter set with this one. The total savings still clocks in at almost $115. If you’ve been looking for a way to get into Marvel: Crisis Protocol this starter set is literally one of the best deals out there to do just that.
X-Men Starter Set Upclose
Now, as I mentioned these miniatures have been out for a while. So while I didn’t exactly build all them from this particular set, I’ve collected and painted all of them already. So instead of grey plastic here’s my X-Men Starter Set all painted up.

I wanted to mention that Wolverine doesn’t come with the damaged Sentinel head. I had a spare and just replaced his tactical rock with it. That seemed a lot more fitting in my mind.
I also want to mention that my Mystique still has the silencer on her pistol. We’ll see if that breaks off and then I’ll just have one that looks the same as the box.
I can’t recommend this boxed set enough for new players. The good news is that AMG said this boxed set should be sticking around for a while as a part of the core lineup of offerings. If you’re looking for this one it’s already out and available in stores and online!
