Apocalypse World: Burned Over is back with a rousingly successful 3rd Edition on Kickstarter now in its final 33 hours. There’s still time!
Apocalypse World is an RPG that changed the whole game. For the better, I think. Focused on genre emulation and player moves, Apocalypse World has left a big mark on the tabletop RPG sphere. You can tell because so many games are “Powered-by-the-Apocalypse”. You’ll find all sorts of titles, including Thirsty Sword Lesbians, Monster of the Week, Avatar: Legends, Flying Circus, The Sprawl, The Veil, and the list goes on.
Even games that take a slightly different form with their dice, like Blades in the Dark or Ironsworn, trace their mitochondrial path back to Apocalypse World and some compelling, creative hacks thereof, which is why it’s so exciting to see that the 3rd Edition of AW, Apocalypse World: Burned Over, has done so well on Kickstarter. With 33 hours to go, and nearly $200K raised, this is your chance to get in on the next generation of the Apocalypse, all those games a ‘Powered By’.

Apocalypse World: Burned Over is the Kickstarter for the 3rd Edition of the game. And make no mistake – it is a 3rd Edition, spelled out plainly in the Kickstarter text. That means updated playbooks, new settings and ‘add-on’ books, plus all the apocalyptic glory you could want.
Created by the original designers, Vincent & Meguey Baker, it’s hailed as a “deep redesign” of Apocalypse World. And you don’t have to wait to see what that means. You can get an idea of what you’re in for with a preview of three of the new playbooks, the Brain-Picker, the Gearcutter, and the Volatile, right here.
But that’s just a taste of what you can expect. There are 12 Playbooks all in all, including two new ones: the Restles and the Standout (one is a wanderer, the other is a gang/cult member – it all feels very Fury Road in the best way). But old playbooks have been updated with either minor tweaks or “radical revisions and remixes”. All to make Apocalypse World: Burned Over your first stop Apocalypse shop.

But what really has me champing at the bit for this Kickstarter is the Stretch Goals and add-ons. For example, you can get the Burned Over Extended Playbooks, which gets you 11 more playbooks. But real excited is the “Creator’s Guide to PbtA” which is a document that is all about PbtA games and how to make them. It’s a guide designed to get you feet first into the act of designing your own game.
That alone makes it worth the look. Because this is paving the road for RPGs to come. Trust me folks, you won’t want to miss this Kickstarter. There’s only 33ish hours left at press time, and they’ve hit all the stretch goals. It’s gaming history right here in the making. So, get in while you can!
