Penguin Random House will release Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos, a new Magic: The Gathering novel, into retail in April 2026.

The new novel, by New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire, follows would-be mage Eula Blue that has found her planeswalker spark. To enhance her skills, she travels to the mage school of Strixhaven (see “‘Strixhaven: School of Mages’“). There, she enrolls in her first semester of magic school where she will have to fight for her place in this world or end up dead before her final exams.

The new novel brings back one of the Ghosts of Magic’s Past, the age-old book promo. The first Magic book promos appeared along with the 1994-1995 HarperPrism series of Arena books. They were obtained via a mail-in coupon, and some of these promos, such as Arena and the classic Mana Crypt, are still very collectible. Post-HarperPrism, WotC had continued to do the occasional book promo with comics, crossover publications and manga (see “Magic Manga“), but this is the first time in decades a Magic promo card comes with a proper novel.

Strixhaven: Omens of Chaos is a 432-page hardcover book that will retail for $29.00. The promo card included with the novel is a Command Tower with Strixhaven artwork.
