ElfQuest, which has a new RPG coming later this year, is back with a gallery edition of beautifully illustrated short stories from Wendy Pini.
This one is for the real ElfQuest fans. Out for pre-order this week: ElfQuest: Hidden Years. This is a beautiful gallery edition collection of illustrated, standalone short stories from the world of ElfQuest. And this is on top of the upcoming RPG being developed by Chaosium. If you have never heard of this world of adventurous, vaguely polyamorous elves and their trials, travails, and magical adventures, this is the perfect time to get on board.
ElfQuest: Hidden Years
Originally, ElfQuest was a black-and-white indie comic. Throughout its early days, it was pulling in folks with its adventure stories and diverse cast of characters. As you might imagine, nerds found it, and loved it, and soon it became a phenomenon all its own. Co-creators Richard and Wendy Pini revamped it in the 90s with full-color publishing, starting with this very series.
ElfQuest: Hidden Years gathers together the first five issues. Each one is full of standalone stories that require no context to get what’s going on. Which is good, because I will say the one thing about ElfQuest is that you really can’t just jump in anywhere.
Continuity is only the half of it. But, the other half is the gorgeous watercolor art by Wendy Pini, which is literally being preserved in Columbia University’s Rare Book & Manuscript Library. But you can still see the artwork. It’s the centerpiece of the upcoming new Gallery Edition from Dark Horse Comics.
“Each of the five color issues within the ElfQuest: Hidden Years Gallery Edition hardcover are standalone stories, unlettered to offer an unprecedented look at Wendy Pini’s lush artwork, complete with her margin notes, color tests, and behind-the-scenes material. This volume is a powerful example of the incredible world-building and visual storytelling in ElfQuest that has set the standard in fantasy comics for decades.”
ElfQuest: Hidden Years is currently out for pre-order. Delivery is expected in July. Again, this one is really for the ElfQuest fans. But hey, you’d be surprised, they turn up everywhere.
People love elves. Especially elves who tell radical stories.
Look for ElfQuest: Hidden Years – Gallery Edition July 14!
