Wondering what WotC is up to for the coming year? Well, here’s one guess, based on what we’ve seen from recent Unearthed Arcanas.

It’s 2026 and one of the things people like to do is look out at the year ahead and try to plan things out. And though there’s no official word from WotC just yet as to what their 2026 lineup will be, based on recent Unearthed Arcana playtests, we can make some educated guesses (but still guesses) at what might be on the lineup.

A Psion Book?

Dark Sun might be in the cards. For a couple of reasons. First up, you might recall we saw the Psion offered up as a whole playtest packet in and of itself. Accompanying it were a few new spells, a whole bunch of new Psion-specific subclasses, and everything else you’d expect a new class to have if it were going to slot right in to the game.

I could very easily see WotC putting out a book a lot like Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, focused on the Psion instead. Now, a good fit for the Psion book might be the world of Dark Sun. But I could see WotC not wanting to throw both a brand new class and a batch of subclasses and a campaign setting in the same book. So maybe instead we’d see something like…

Dark Sun Campaign Setting Book(s)?

The other big release to look to for WotC’s new paradigm is the recent Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting release, which was actually two books. We had the player’s guide, Heroes of Faerun, and the GM’s book/adventure anthology, Adventures in Faerun.

This is my best guess for like a big November release (which WotC tends to love having). You’d get two books out of the deal, one for players, which contains the Psion and also the Apocalyptic Subclasses from the playtest of the same name. Plus, a return to Dark Sun is sure to stoke the fires of nostalgia.

Wizards Of WotC-ly Place?

The other big Unearthed Arcana of last year was the Arcane Subclasses Unearthed Arcana. This was another big batch of subclasses, with a freshly reimagined Hexblade that went through at leats two different rounds of revision. We also saw subclasses like the Tattooed Warrior Monk and the Arcane Archer along with the four “missing” Wizard subclasses (Necromancy, Conjuration, Transmutation, and Enchantment).

This UA went through two rounds of playtesting, so it seems very likely that WotC wants to dial in at least some of those for publication. I could see it tying into a “[Famous In-Game Wizard]’s Guide to Magic” or something.

Red Wizards?

But the other big possibility for the Arcane Subclasses might be related to the announcements from the big 2024 “future of D&D panel” which talked about looking at the Red Wizards of Thay as a big campaign/release after 2025.

And it’s not just the Unearthed Arcana that lends itself to this. Red Wizards have been cropping up a little more, especially in the Forgotten Realms books. The new Circle Magic ruleset is perfectly in line with the kinds of magical shenanigans a Red Wizard would get up to. That kind of rule seems almost intended to pave the way for a DM to have a villainous magical organization leveling powerful magic at parties who might be higher in level. So I could see Arcane Subclasses getting mixed in with an actual campaign, like in the old days.

An Adventure Anthology

Finally – just because I want to look back on this post and have been right about at least one thing, I predict that we’ll see WotC release an adventure anthology that takes players from level 1 to at least level 10, maybe level 12.

Happy adventuring!
