Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer is a new expansion for the Fallout RPG that unlocks solo mode. Wander alone, but not unguided.

War never changes, but Fallout does. Case in point, just look at how you go from being a lone wanderer in earlier games to building your own community, complete with a little house, workshop, and wasteland decor in the later ones. And in the Fallout RPG, by its very nature, you’re never going to be a lone wanderer – you’re going to have your friends with you.

Until now. A new expansion from Modiphius, due out in April, evokes the original feel of Fallout. Where you’re just one person, alone against the wastes, and whatever you find is what you find. Typically, a lot of irradiated geckos bite you to death, if memory serves.

Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer – Solo Mode For Lone Wanderers IRL

Actually, Solo Mode isn’t just for people who have trouble scheduling sessions and/or have no friends. They’re a great way to engage your creative muscles, because sometimes you just want the experience of playing the RPG, and you’re not the one who has to run it. Also, a great way to learn the mechanics of any game.

And Wasteland Wanderer is no exception. This gives you the procedures you need to generate your own story. All you need are some d20 tables (also in the book, but real solo RPG sickos know that you can – and should – expand those by picking up ones that sound cool to you, even from other genres) and your imagination.

Oh and the book. You’ll need that, too.

“Congratulations!

If you’re reading this, you’ve been selected to leave your vault and explore the surface! If it’s Reclamation Day, see the accompanying leaflet VLPD-11-A. This survival guide has been prepared for your lone expedition, with instructions on how to navigate the possible dangers after decades of nuclear disaster. But don’t worry, you won’t really be alone, because thanks to your Vault-Tec issued Pip-Boy, you’ll be able to record your expedition’s progress. It is imperative that you record your progress so that if your Pip-Boy is reclaimed by your replacement, they will know what to do next!

Within the confines of this 256 page book, you’ll find all you need to explore the Wasteland on your own. Mostly it’s rules for adjudicating solo character creation. You get to make a vault dweller and their vault, as well as randomly generate the Wasteland in your neck of the woods. A lot of what makes these solo RPG books solid is the set of oracle tables, and it looks like there’s plenty of them here. There are quests, scenarios, opponents, and obstacles – that’s just to start.

So if you can’t get enough Fallout, or want to learn more about the RPG, you might want to check out Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer, available now for pre-order. And when you do pre-order, you get a PDF version immediately.

You’ll have to provide your own Inkspots soundtrack, though!
